Q I would love to repurpose my garden shed as a fun, colourful ‘she shed’ for crafting. What sort of paint should I use? A “I would recommend Sadolin Superdec. It’s a self-priming, self-levelling water-based paint and can be used on a number of different substrates including wood (with the exception of decking) metal and concrete,” says Derek. “Plus, it’s highly durable, resistant to cracking, peeling and flaking and comes in a choice of 300 colours,” adds Sean. “It can also be applied to both new or previously painted or stained surfaces. For a stand-out shed consider colours like Cocktail time, Violet Hour or Pressed Fuschia.”

Q My timber decking is looking tired. Is there anything I can do to revive it? It gets a lot of sun, so I need a durable solution. A “If you’re looking to revive your deck’s natural timber grain I would suggest Sadolin Classic All Purpose Woodstain. It’s available in 13 ready-mixed wood shades but can also be mixed using our Colourmixing in-store service,” says Derek. “If you’re after a completely new look, why not go for a solid paint colour,” suggests Sean. “Sadolin Beautiflex, a solvent wood stain, works especially well on decking surfaces that have become severely weathered or uneven in appearance and comes in a wide variety of colours including greys, blues, greens and warm red browns."

Q My garden has a lot of hard landscaping with additional built-in concrete seating, planters and an outdoor kitchen area. I originally painted everything white but I’d like an update. What colour would you suggest? A “Vermont Grey is a warm, tactile colour with a mauve undertone which can be really accentuated depending on the weather. For an additional pop of colour, I really like and would recommend a feature colour like Cote dA’ zure, a rich teal which complements Vermont Grey beautifully,” says Sean. “For the best finish prep is the key. Be sure to treat any organic growth with Sandtex Fungicidal Solution, then clean thoroughly. Use a decking brush (never a wire brush) to remove any flaking paint and apply Sandtex Stablising Solution to any bare or powdery patches before painting. For best results I would always recommend two coats of paint, applying the second coat after three to four hours.” “For a pop of colour try a feature colour like Cote d’Azure” Sean Madden, Crown Product Champion

Q I’m planning a garden get- together with family now that Covid restrictions have eased and would love to give my wooden furniture a revamp. What’s the best paint for the job? A “Unless you pack away your garden furniture at the end of the season, those lovely wooden chairs and tables will take the brunt of the winter weather. To get them tip top for your party, I would suggest Sadolin Garden Furniture Stain and Protector, which comes in three wood shades: Golden Oak, Natural Cedar or Warm Teak,” says Derek. “Again Sadolin Superdec can also be used if you’re after a solid colour,” adds Sean. Whatever paint you choose, the key to the finish is in the preparation. “Surfaces should be clean, sound and dry,” says Derek. “If the wood is weathered, use a stiff bristle brush or sand back in the direction of the grain. Wipe off any residue with a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits and allow to evaporate fully. Consider too, treating the chair and table legs with quick dry wood preserver (prior to painting or staining) to prevent rot. Knots or holes can be covered up with a Sadolin wood filler and rusty screws and nails replaced with non-ferrous ones. Make sure to use a good quality synthetic brush or roller, if you don’t want to see any brush strokes.”

Q My garden is small and quite shaded. I’d love to paint the fence to brighten it up. Is this an easy DIY job? What paint works best? A “Painting a garden fence is a fantastic way of injecting a splash of colour to a shaded garden and not difficult at all,” says Derek. “Sadolin has a fantastic range

of paints for exterior woods such as Shed & Fence paint which comes in eight fabulous shades or Quick Dry and Classic Woodstains which can be mixed to a wide range of colours. For a complete colour change, or to hide any blemishes, Superdec Satin is ideal. It can be mixed to practically any colour; your problem will be deciding which one to choose.”
