READY TO WELCOME HOME BABY BOOTH NO. 2!

It’s been an exciting spring for us at the Booth home. By the time you read this, we will likely have welcomed a new member to our family. Katie and I are expecting our second baby boy any day now. It’s an incredible time. Owen, our first child, is 3 now, and he’s thrilled about the prospect of having a little brother. He keeps talking about all the things he’s going to teach his sibling: how to ride a bike, how to swim, and how to jump off furniture (we discouraged that last one). Owen is growing up so fast. He started preschool last fall, and he loves to be outdoors. He’s always ready for an adventure, whether it’s riding his bike around the block or taking part in a neighborhood activity with his mom and me. Recently, he started swimming lessons, and we love watching him improve with each practice. The last three years have been a joy-filled adventure, and we could not be more excited to add to our family and watch another child go through each stage of toddlerhood. They say it takes a village, and we’re blessed to have supportive people all around us who want to be a part of Owen’s life. His grandparents have been very involved, as I’m sure they will be with our next son. Owen spends Mondays and Tuesdays with Katie’s parents and Wednesdays and Thursdays with mine. Katie and I usually have Fridays off together, which means we have three-day weekends to spend as a family, a luxury we are grateful for. We’re excited to share the beautiful Idaho outdoors with our new baby so that hopefully he comes to appreciate it as much as Owen does. We already have a few camping trips lined up for the summer, including a trip to Redfish in July. This is an annual

adventure for us, and we love to go fishing, boating, and hiking beneath the spectacular skyline of the Sawtooths. Owen, of course, has been eager for Easter because it means a visit from the Easter Bunny. We usually go to an egg hunt, though, this year it will depend on how we all feel with a new baby at home. We might just enjoy the holiday here, treasuring the time we get to spend together (probably with a few treats for Owen).

As a parent and dentist, I try to limit the amount of sugar Owen eats, and that gets tricky around candy-filled holidays like Easter. I know it’s not always an option to avoid it altogether, so limiting it is my strategy. As long as it’s in moderation and Owen is still brushing and flossing, it’s okay if he indulges a bit. I’ll usually limit him to just a small bit of candy instead of letting him go crazy with a basket full.

We hope you enjoy your Easter and spring weather as much as we do. From our family to yours, happy April and happy Easter!

The 3 Best Ways

to Play Hooky With Your Child

The Zoo The zoo is a great place to educate your child

When Gary Chapman’s book “The Five Love Languages” came out, many people focused on building better relationships with their spouses. But just as words of affirmation, acts of service, touch, gifts, and quality time can help your marriage, these concepts can also help your relationship with your children. One way to show our children how much we love them is to spend quality time with them. And what better way to do that than to break them out of school to play some hooky?

outside of school. They can play hooky and still learn something. Many exhibits will provide information about the animals, their habitats, and conservation efforts. At the very least, your child might encounter an animal they’ve never heard of before. Family Entertainment Center While classics like Skee-Ball and Pop-A-Shot may be harder to find, there are still plenty of exciting activities for you and your child to participate in. Hit up the arcade, peel out in the go-karts, or test out your putt-putt game over 18 holes. There’s an activity for all ages at these fun zones, so you and your child will always have something to choose from. Families often get so wrapped up in the activities of daily life and the chaos that accompanies it that fun is forgotten. What if kids were able to detach from the expectations of accomplishment placed on them in school and extracurricular activities and just focus on having a blast one day with Mom and Dad? Who knows — maybe by playing some hooky with your child, you’ll find the kid in you!

Baseball Sharing your love of sports can be a fun way to bond with your child. While day games might not be as common as they used to be, most teams will have at least a few of them each month. These tickets are usually cheaper and often come with promotions to help draw in fans. While most everyone else will be at work or school, you and your child will have free rein of the ballpark. Just be sure to root for the home team!

TAKING CARE OF YOUR BABY’S ORAL HEALTH

TIPS ON WHAT TO DO

Believe it or not, your infant’s oral hygiene is important — even before they have teeth! Bacteria can build up inside your child’s mouth, causing harm to their gums and, eventually, their teeth. Though children’s teeth are temporary, they’re still vulnerable to infection and decay when not taken care of properly. Listed below are a few simple ways to secure your infant’s oral health. Your Dental Health One important way to maintain your child’s dental health is to maintain your own. Not only does this lead to good habits for the both of you, it can prevent bacteria from spreading. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, bacteria called streptococcus mutans can spread from mothers to their infants, which can lead to dental decay. Cleaning It’s important to keep your infant’s mouth clean. Bacteria can grow in their mouth and around their gums, creating infections even before baby teeth set in. Clean your infant’s mouth at least twice a day or after each meal. Wash your hands, then wrap clean, damp gauze around your finger, and gently wipe your baby’s gums.

Appointments Scheduling a dental appointment is a sure way to prevent problems. You should see a dentist regularly to make sure your teeth are healthy before and after your child is born. When your child turns 1 year old, or their first tooth appears, take your infant in for their first dental appointment. By taking care of your dental health, you can take care of your infant’s. Call Ustick Dental at 208-375-8720 and start your child down the path to lifelong oral care. Teeth or no teeth, oral health is important, and keeping up with it will benefit you and your child in the long run.
