Healthy Heart Month Highlighting American Heart Month: Sanibel Recreation Center's Annual Initiative The Sanibel Recreation Center celebrates American Heart Month annually by urging everyone to engage in activities that promote a healthy heart.

Understanding Blood Pressure Readings

It's important to know your blood pressure numbers, as they may indicate that you have high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. Your blood pressure can be read by two numbers, the American Heart Association states, “Your blood pressure is recorded as two numbers: Systolic blood pressure (the first number) – indicates how much pressure your blood is exerting against your artery walls when the heart contracts. Diastolic blood pressure (the second number) – indicates how much pressure your blood is exerting against your artery walls while the heart muscle is resting between contractions.” Click here to learn more.

Chart courtesy of American Heart Association click here to read more.

It is important to learn and recognize the Heart Attack Warning Signs. The American Heart Association states that some of the warning signs may be, “ Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes – or it may go away and then return. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain. Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. Shortness of breath. This can occur with or without chest discomfort. Other signs. Other possible signs include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness. Click here to learn more. The Importance of Early Detection

Get Your Blood Pressure Checked For FREE! Don't miss out on the opportunity to get your blood pressure checked for free! The Sanibel Recreation Center has joined forces with the Sanibel Fire District to offer this service on a monthly basis. The next session will be held on Monday, February 26th.
