Avenues PT. Determining The Origins of Your Pain

Sometimes it happens when a pain develops that you can immediately identify the cause. A new pair of shoes may cause a sharp pain in your heel, or an old chair at work may cause your back to grow sore and uncomfortable as time goes on. But there are other situations in which pain develops, and the cause of the pain is unclear.

DETERMINING THE ORIGINS OF YOUR PAIN!

Different types of bodily pain can tell you different things about your body and overall bodily health. Sometimes, a pain in your arm or your leg may have little to nothing to do with an actual issue in your arm or leg. Physical therapists are like well- trained detectives when it comes to identifying the causes of pain. A physical therapist knows the way the nervous system works, making it possible to identify the potential causes of pain, even if the

pain is manifesting itself in an unusual or seemingly inexplicable way. Whether you are suffering from pain in your head, your back, your neck or anywhere else in your body, working with a physical therapist can help you find the relief you are looking for. Physical therapists are trained in identifying and treating the cause of your pain, giving you the opportunity to shift away from the ongoing use of pain medication and instead find relief from your pain with a series of strategies that include stretching, muscle building and flexibility training. Not all neck or head pain is the same, so understanding the basics of what you are dealing with is the first step to acheiving relief.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR PAIN

your pain appropriately may be helpful in determining the best treatment methods for your body’s needs. • Whatdoyouthinkmaybecausingthepain?Ofcourse, ithappensthatapain willdevelop, andyouaredumbfoundedas towhy, butmoreoften thannot, there issomething thatyou thinkcouldbe influencing it. If thepainstarted around the same time as a change in environment or life circumstances, then it is worth telling your physical therapist about the association. Another thing to consider about your pain is whether or not it develops at particular timesof thedayoryear.Thereareplentyofsituationswhensomeone begins to experience pain when the weather starts to change, and it turns out that the pain is a result of arthritis and inflammation. There are other situations in which the pain will develop as a result of prolonged sitting or the opposite — such as when things get crazy at home or at work, and you find that you are not getting as much sleep as usual. Considering any changes in your daily habits or environmental factors can be very helpful in determining what is causing your pain. Regardless of where your pain is, how long you’ve been dealing with it, or how intense the pain feels, the smart thing to do when pain develops is to speak with a physical therapist. Working with a physical therapist can help you finally get a step ahead of your pain, finding treatment options that are designed to provide you with long-term relief instead of temporary relief from medication. When you meet with a physical therapist to understand where your pain may be coming from, one of the first things you’ll do is have a conversation about your pain. How long you’ve been experiencing pain, where it developed and how the pain manifests itself are all very important distinctions that can help shed some light on what may be causing your discomfort. Hereareafewthingsyoumaywanttoconsiderbeforeheading intophysicaltherapy: • Consider exactly where the pain occurs in your body, and research what thedifferentpartsof thebodyarecalledso thatyoucanhaveanaccurate and helpful conversation about your pain. Is it a lingering ache? Is it a sharp stab? Is it more of a tingling feeling? Each of these sensations are actually associated with different types of problems, so describing

PATIENT SUCCESS SPOTLIGHTS

“I’m not using my cane anymore!”

“I came to Avenues Physical Therapy after two other physical therapy places. I have been to other physical therapy places, but none compare to Avenues Physical Therapy. I am especially happy with the care and patience Linda has shown me. “Let’s do 15, you did 10 last week.” OK, Linda. I think I have made great improvements since I first came here, up and down steps, lifting things from the floor and not using my cane anymore. I have a knee replacement to get and when its time for physical therapy again, I’m coming straight back here. Thank you, Avenues Physical Therapy, and especially Linda. By the way, I won the $10 in the misspelled word contest!” - John F.

The treatments helped, but I was still suffering with severe backpain.Afteranothervisitwithmydoctor, sheagain recommendedphysical therapy. My wife and my doctor insisted I try physical therapy. Mywife,Ann,hadpreviouslyhadphysical therapy treatmentatAvenuesTherapy Clinic. Kelsey Kean helped her, and she suggested I make an appointment. I am glad I listened to Ann and my doctor. I am now able to walk, get out of bed and walk up and down the stairs without pain. I want to thank Tawna Bovero and Kelsey Kean for their treatment and great advice. - Ralph R.

“Beginning to play tennis again!”

“In mid December I was really having trouble with my left heel hurting. I was limping when I walked and didn’t want to put any weight on my foot. I stopped playing tennis because of the aching, pain and some swelling. I finally got an x-ray and had a bone spur on my heel. I was really afraid I might need surgery. After putting up with the pain I called Avenues PhysicalTherapy. With physical therapy, T.L.C. and exercises, my foot is now feeling better and the pain has definitely decreased. I am slowly beginning to play tennis again and go for walks with much more comfort.” - Beverly R.

What Is Aquatic Therapy?

EFFEC TIVE TR E ATMENT FOR :

At Avenues Physical Therapy, our unique one-on-one aquatic therapy program provides patients with the ability to unload weight from their joints, while achieving more movement with less pain. Aquatic therapy supports the joints of the spine, knee, and hips, helping to reduce pain quickly while improving movement and balance. This translates into patients recovering quicker, especially in the beginning painful stages of an injury or post surgery. When combined with the skills and knowledge of our Physical Therapists, this type of therapy puts patients on a faster route to recovery.

Our aquatic therapy program helps to improve muscle strength, postural awareness, endurance, cardiovascular function, flexibility, pain-free range of motion, balance and coordination. We use the Cheyenne Aquatic Center’s state-of-the-art pool and private changing facilities have ease of access for all patients, including those needing assistance transferring from wheelchairs. Come see the results our aquatic therapy program can achieve, call 307-634-0298 today to find out more!
