Stephen Simpson
As spring tentatively begins to emerge from the darker winter months, it heralds the promise of renewed life, colour and light. There could be no better time to unveil the new style of work from artist Stephen Simpson. Symphony has evolved from Stephen’s current floral work, retaining the textural weight and high gloss finish for which he has become known, but it also draws upon his earlier abstract work. Working with oil paint, acrylics, modelling paste and resin, Stephen focused on creating layers
within the pieces so that – when viewed in different lights and from varied angles – alternate elements of the work will stand out and catch the viewer’s eye each time they look at it. Stephen says: “I found getting the balance of flower abstraction and adding enough detail a real challenge in this new collection; it’s tempting sometimes to overdo the detail. I’m looking forward to seeing how this new work grows and develops naturally.”
