Pop Art gets a 2020 makeover

It may be hard to top the incredible story of Paul Stephenson, who after a chance discovery of Andy Warhol’s original acetates at auction has spent over a decade bringing them to life. In a groundbreaking project that has been documented by VICE and the BBC, Paul tirelessly rendered Warhol’s methodology. This included tracking down the exact paints – some of which date back to the 70s and 80s – and working alongside the Pop Art founder’s original printer, Alexander Heinrici, in his NYC studio. So faithful was his iteration that the late Warholian expert Professor Rainer Crone deemed his works ‘authentic Andy Warhol paintings’. Posing

important questions about the authorship of art, Paul took inspiration from other artists who have recreated Warhol’s graphics, including Charles Lutz, Richard Pettibone and Elaine Sturtevant. The new After Warhol series is printed as silkscreens on paper, echoing Warhol’s sentiment that art should be accessible to all. ‘Mao’, ‘Jackie’, ‘Self Portrait’ and ‘Little Electric Chair’ are available in an exciting variety of colourways. Paul says: “I’ve accessed a box of secrets about what it was like to work alongside to Andy Warhol. An art gallery on the high street selling Warhols in 2020 is pure Warhol!”
