ECOC’S MARKET FOCUS: AT THE HEART OF THE EXPO

24TH – 26TH SEPTEMBER FIERA ROMA, ROME, ITALY

Market Focus is increasingly one of the biggest draws at the ECOC exhibition. It’s invariably standing room only unless you’re there before the cleaners have left. Matthew Peach previews

Advances in Disaggregated Line Systems for Emerging Data Centre Interconnects II-VI: Dr Sanjai Parthasarathi, vice president, product marketing and strategy Disaggregation is in vogue for emerging data centre interconnects. The talk focusses on these kinds of systems and presents enabling technology advances in areas of amplification, wavelength management, performance and line integrity monitoring. It also addresses the challenges and the opportunities presented by such architectures. 100G/400/800 GbE optics Consortium for On-Board Optics: Brad Booth, president of COBO. 400-gigabit and 800-gigabit data rates will enable innovative technologies such as 5G, Artificial Intelligence, and the IoT – but the promise of these speeds will not be realised without an industry standard for highbandwidth on-board optics. As networking technologies get faster, concerns have also been raised about pluggable connector performance. Additionally, switch faceplates have a mechanical dimension limit for additional pluggable connectors. In this presentation, hear how COBO’s specification – capable of supporting 800Gbps – addresses these concerns by bringing the connector on-board and moving the optics away from the faceplate. This permits new and creative designs to support the higher thermal requirements of faster and larger radix switches. The Road to an all 100G Serial Ecosystem Arista: Andreas Bechtolsheim, chief development officer With the shipment of first-generation 400G switches based on 50G-PAM4 SERDES rapidly approaching, development focus has shifted to next-generation 400G and 800G switches that use 100G-PAM4 SERDES. This talk discusses the challenges

O ne of the busiest areas of the ECOC Exhibition is the Market Focus, which gives exhibitors the opportunity to hear the latest from real industry figures ‘unplugged’; to speak exclusively to senior executives and analysts about current hot business areas; and, to be frank, to enjoy a sit-down and a coffee after hours of walking the floor. Speaking slots within the Market Focus have become highly sought-after, with the packed programme featuring expert speakers from companies such as Ericsson, analysts like Ovum and organisations such as FTTH Council Europe, to name but a few. This year a New Markets track is added for the first time expanding once again the range of topics under discussion. At the time of writing, at least 30 different Market Focus topics had been scheduled, of which many are detailed below. Sponsored by Inphi, the three-day series of presentations will cover topics ranging from FTTX evolution and next-generation data centres to optics as an enabler for 5G. A TASTE OF TALKS TO COME The inaugural 2018 talk will be titled ‘Data Centres: Optics in Cloud Computing’ with Inphi the first of six speakers which also include big players Facebook, II-VI Inc., the Consortium for On-Board Optics (COBO), Arista Networks and silicon photonics device specialist Luxtera. Day 2 will see the spotlight cast on

‘Photonics Integration and Digital Silicon Photonics’, with speakers from Intel, Lightwave Logic, ePIXfab, Fraunhofer HHI, Ciena, and Light Counting Market taking to the stage in the morning. The final day will be dedicated to the subject of ‘Service and Content Provider Optimal Transmission,’ with Ovum, BT, Finisar, Adva, Cisco, Huawei, NTT, China Mobile and CESNET all now confirmed as participating. Overall, this year’s Market Focus topics have been independently selected by the ECOC Exhibition Advisory Committee, which is the decision-making force behind the presentation selection process and includes representatives from across the optical communications space: telecoms operators, system vendors and component manufacturers to industry analyst groups and independent industry bodies. SELECTEDMARKET FOCUS HIGHLIGHTS FTTH/B Market Panorama Inphi: Xi Wang, Senior Director Product Marketing For the first time, next generation PAM4 based optical modules in various form factors with vastly different application targets will coexist and begin to be deployed globally throughout cloud data centres, wireless 5G networks and enterprise networks. This presentation will detail the advancements of commercially available PAM4 DSP platforms and how this cutting-edge technology will enable operators to win time-to-market and ramp at record speeds.
