themselves in the beauty of Rome and wander among magnificent imperial ruins, imposing Christian churches, Renaissance palaces and Baroque fountains. ECOC has an associated social program that offers a taste of all this, from the Get Together after the workshops with a surprise on a gigantic screen, the grand reception at the Thermal Baths of Caracalla with exceptional access for a drink in the underground chambers, to the Social Dinner in the nineteenth-century Villa Miani, with its breath-taking view of the dome of St. Peter.” Plenaries aside, this year’s full conference programme features more than 400 presentations. For datacentre and computer networks, the latest research papers cover system architectural aspects, with focus on energy-efficient optical switching and on advanced optical interconnect solutions to achieve high capacity. The technical programme chair expanded, “Optical networking talks will highlight the relevance of new techniques
simply ‘Photons & Space’. Since 2014, Battiston has been President of the ASI, as well as being Chair of General Physics at the Trento University Physics Department. He has worked for over 30 years on international collaborations in the field of experimental physics. His specialisms including fundamental interactions; strong interactions, electroweak interaction physics and the search for antimatter and dark matter in cosmic rays. MORE THAN A CONFERENCE Bogoni went on to explain why new attendees – both regular and first timers – should spend some quality time at the ECOC conference in the Eternal City. “ECOC is the biggest European Conference on optical communications. It offers the latest advances in research and technology, while in the large exhibition there are the newest products and systems. And it’s not all work, for sure,” she added. “Attendees will be able to immerse network delivery methods and OSP and ISP for FTTx vendor independent products. The full list of topics for Market Focus are: service and content provider optical transmission, optical network agility/ software defined networks, datacentres: optics in cloud computing, new markets, photonics integration and digital silicon photonics and fibre access. “We were overwhelmed by the success of last year’s Market Focus, which attracted more than 3,000 visitors,” said Beverley Lucas, event director at Nexus Media Events Ltd. “The different tracks provide a platform for industry professionals to gain knowledge of and insights into the advancements made on the latest trends in the industry, including the biggest areas of growth such as 5G and the Internet of Things. We’re sure the addition of the New Markets track will also prove popular, reflecting the rapidly changing nature of the industry and giving a real sense of what’s yet to come.” With over 5,000 optical industry professionals expected to attend the event, the ECOC 2018 expo and conference is set to be the best one yet.

Pan Jianwei is a quantum physicist, who received his PhD from the University of Vienna, Austria, where he worked in the group of Anton Zeilinger. He is mainly known for his work in the field of quantum entanglement. In June 2017, Pan’s team used their own quantum satellite to demonstrate entanglement with satellite-to-ground total summed lengths between 1600km and 2400km and entanglement distribution over 1200 km between receiver stations. In 2017, Nature named Pan Jianwei among the top 10 people who mattered in the year, calling him the ‘Father of Quantum’.

EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON OPTICAL COMMUNICATION
24th - 26th September Fiera Roma, Rome, Italy
ECOC exhibition and conference is organised every year in a different city and country in Europe and for the first time ever it will take place in Rome and is Europe’s number one event for optical technology in communications. September’s ECOC exhibition will be the 23rd year it has complemented the highly technical ECOC Conference, which is now in its 44th year. The doors will be opening on Monday 24th September at 9.30am and the expo will close at 5.00pm. Opening and closing times will be the same on Tuesday 25th and on Wednesday 26th the expo will run from 9.30am and close at 4.00pm. With over 332 international exhibitors, ECOC 2018 will be the biggest event ever, with cutting-edge optical technology on display from the world’s leading manufacturers. Expanding on the CTTS popular feature held at ECOC over the past ten years, the FTTx Centre will this year again incorporate live interactive demonstrations including fibre optic
