Christ in the believer. Take the common iron poker from your fireside, and place it amid the fiery bed o f burning coals, and soon it becomes red hot, because the fire is in it whilst it is in the fire. Shall the time not come when we shall learn the secret of a life o f ardent devotion and glowing zeal, because we have mastered the lesson o f the reciprocal indwelling o f the saint and the Saviour ? OCTOBER 25 T he L aw of the D ivine H ousehold “A s ye have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him." (Col. 2 :6 ). Faith is the one law o f the divine house hold. And as once you obtained forgive ness and salvation by faith, so now claim and receive the Holy Spirit’s fullness. Fulfill the conditions; wait quietly but definitely before God in prayer, for He gives His Holy Spirit to them that ask Him: then reverently appropriate this glorious g ift; and rise from your knees, and go on your way, reckoning that God has kept His word, and that you are filled with the Spirit. Trust Him day by day to fill you and keep you filled. According to your faith, so shall it be done to you. Faith, mighty faith, the promise sees, And looks to that alone; Laughs at impossibilities, And cries, “ It shall be done 1” Obedient faith, that waits on Thee, Thou never wilt reprove; But Thou wilt form Thy Son in me, And perfect me in love. W e must be very careful in judging our motives: searching them as the detectives at the doors o f the House o f Commons search each stranger who enters. When, by the grace of God, we have been delivered from grosser forms of sin, we are still liable to the subtle working o f self, in our holiest and loveliest hours. It poisons our motive. It breathes decay on our fairest fruit-bearing. It whispers seductive flat teries into our pleased ears. It turns the spirit from its holy purpose, as the masses o f iron on ocean steamers deflect the iJeedle o f the compass from the pole. So long as there is some thought of per sonal advantage, some idea o f acquiring the praise and commendation o f men, some aim at self-aggrandisement, it will be sim ply impossible to find out God’s purpose concerning us. The door must be reso lutely shut against all this, if we would hear the still small voice. W e have no need or right to run hither and thither to ask our friends what we ought to d o; but there is no harm in our taking pains to gather all reliable informa tion, on which the flame o f holy thought, and consecrated purpose, may feed, and grow strong. It is for us ultimately to de cide as God shall teach us; but His voice may come to us through the voice of sanc tified common sense, acting on the ma- —C harles W esley .
