Our Work MUST Go Forward In the light of the Gospel command what is your responsibility toward India’s 351 millions?

“For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do o f his good pleasure" (Phil. 2:13). Doubtless, there are avenues by which the will o f God reaches us, o f which we know nothing. And there are numberless methods by which God’s will can impress itself on ours without violating the indi viduality o f our willinghood. It is enough to know that He does work in us to will and to do o f His own good pleasure. And it is certain that we cannot will aright ex cept He prompt us. More than this, we do not know and cannot say. W e cannot but think, however, that no soul o f man is born outside the range o f the working o f that loving will, which is peace on earth and good will to men. Alas, that it is so often resisted, even unto death I “ Wilt thou be made whole?” (John 5 :6). How many there are around us like the impotent man o f Bethesda 1 They are wait ing for healing with eager desire. To get it, they linger for years in the porches of Mercy’s House. They wistfully see the gladness with which many go away healed. They hope that their turn will come at last. But they are waiting for the wrong thing— for some mysterious troubling of the waters, rather than for the Healer. For a ceremony, and not for Christ. For an angel, and not for the Saviour. For the help of men to put them into salvation, or to their own lame efforts to shuffle into the pool o f healing. To such the Saviour comes. “ Wilt thou.be made whole?” NOVEMBER 6 A t t it u d e D e t e r m in e d b y W il l “ The will of the Lord be done” (Acts 21:14). Even if you are conscious of having swerved for a moment from the path of perfect willinghood, by His grace put your will back again on the side o f Christ, with tears and confessions, and ask Him to hold it, as a father holds the hand o f his child on a slippery day. Forget your feel ings. Entrench yourself in your will. Ask Jesus to purify and sanctify it by His Spirit, so that it may be true to Himself. And believe that He is as eager as you are to still all the rebellion o f the soul, and to make you what you wish and will to be, in your best and holiest hours. Your attitude toward Christ is determined, not by your feelings, but by your steadfast de sire and will. ________ NOVEMBER 7 G e t h s e m a n e L e s s o n s “ Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suf fered” (Heb. 5:8 ). As sons, we must endure the rod o f chastening, which is “not joyous but griev ous.” The way to the kingdom lies through Gethsemane, with its deep shadows and its tears, and sweat of blood. All that can abide the fire must be made to pass through the fire. And let us not begrudge it all, since we learn obedience by the things we suffer; and discover the art o f comforting others as we have been comforted. When to the cross I turn mine eyes,' And rest on Calvary, O Lamb o f God, my Sacrifice, I must remember Thee! —J. M ontgomery . NOVEMBER S W h e r e is Y o u r F a i t h ?

Christian Faith and Life A Monthly Magazine for men in every walk in life. Theolo gians, Educators, Scientists, Ministers, Students, and Laymen of every continent are listed among its readers. It has a Fundamental Conviction. It is that Truth belongs to man in his total nature; and that mere intellect can never arrive. It has a Fundamental Faith. By this Faith it measures all speculations. Above all it sees Christ tower, and to enthrone Him both in faith, in worship, in science, is its devotion. HAROLD PAUL SLOAN, D.D., LL.D. Editor-in-Chief
