by Dr. William Ward Ayer T h e w o r l d will one day see the Devil in the flesh and his name will be “ The Beast”—Anti-Christ. “Anti- Christ” was a terrible word to the early Christians. They quaked in fear at the mention of the name, because it meant tyranny and they knew tyranny as few know it today. Caligula, Herod, Nero and Domitian had tortured and killed thousands. However, to most modem church folk, the term Anti-Christ is meaningless. The Old Testament Scriptures, especially the prophecy of Daniel, warned of “ The Beast,” the “ Terrible One,” who would in figure “ devour the whole earth” . . . tread it down, break it in pieces (Daniel 7:7 and 8:23-25). The coming Beast would conquer kings and kingdoms, speak great words against God, and for a limited time rule the earth in solitary majesty (Rev. 13:1-8). This terrible Beast is coming, perhaps soon, and he will be dominated by Satan himself (Rev. 13:2). To understand the full meaning of the working of Satan in the world today, one must know the revealed aims of the devil. Satan has sworn to destroy the purposes of God, who through Christ is bringing about world
redemption. Through the gospel God is today redeeming those who will believe. In the future the Almighty is to establish the Kingdom of heaven upon earth, and all nations will be judged, purged and brought into conform ity with the will of God (Matt. 25:31-46). Satan is to be cast into the bottomless pit, and the Lord Jesus is to reign in the Kingdom (Rev. 20:1-4). Satan has been working for millenniums to thwart the divine purpose. Satan is persistent; he is not all powerful, neither does he know the inner workings of man’s thoughts. The devil is limited. God is omniscient; He knows all things that are to happen. Satan persistently tries to defeat God. Even though the Bible declares that Satan will finally be defeated, he seems not to believe it, thinking he can yet win out. The devil’s great hope is to find a man whom he can possess and control. Satan saw how God was incarnate in the person of Jesus, so he endeavored to corrupt Him in the temptation (Matt. 4:1-11). The evil one thought he had destroyed (continued on next page)
