Yugoslavia Eases Ban on Bibles

Yugoslav authorities have eased re strictions on the importation of Bibles into Yugoslavia. The British a n d Foreign Bible Society, the sole sup plier of Bibles in that country, had its activities restricted in 1956. Until that time, the society sent as many as 60,000 Bibles into Yugoslavia every year. No Bibles have been printed in Yugoslavia since World War II. In 1957, the Government said that the society had failed to register as a foreign group and that, therefore, it was not permitted to deal with im ports. The society’s Belgrade office con tinued activity on a small scale, with permission to receive Bibles only in registered parcels through the mail. The Belgrade office now receives be tween 500 and 1,000 copies each month. Despite the increase, a short age of Bibles still exists in Yugoslavia. The society normally supplies all Christian communities as well as theological schools with Bibles in the Yugoslavian language. Representatives of the Roman Cath olic and the Eastern O r t h o d o x Churches will hold unofficial theo logical discussions in Venice this year with a view to a possible reunion of the two churches. In announcing the plan, the Vatican radio recalled that the idea was first broached by two Catholic observers in their per sonal capacity at the recent meetings in Rhodes of the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches. The Eastern Orthodox gradually separated from the Church of Rome after 1054 in what is known as the Schism of Cerularius. Its followers are considered schismatics by Rome be cause they refuse to submit to the authority of the Pope and to hold communion with the members of the church subject to him. They are not considered heretics or apostates. The dogmatic differences separating them from the Roman Catholics are slight. Nevertheless, numerous attempts to reunite the two churches have failed. Florence in 1439 was repudiated by the patriarchs of Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem and was never put into effect. It is expected that if the Orthodox Church returns to the communion of the Pope that it will retain the privi leges and customs not in conflict with the dogmas of the Roman Catholic Church. To err is human, but whether or not it is sinful was the subject that engaged a group of psychologists meet ing recently in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Albert Ellis, private practitioner from New York City, struck out against the notion of sin in a symposium on the subject at the sixty-seventh annual convention of the American Psycho logical Association. “ There is no place whatever for the concept of sin in psychotherapy, and to introduce this concept in any manner, shape, or form is highly pernicious and anti-thera- peutic,” Dr. Ellis maintained. Dr. Ellis feels that it is not the therapist’s job to blame his patient for what he has done or to make him suffer for it by feeling sinful a n d worthless. Rather, he thinks, it is the responsi bility of psychotherapy to convince the patient that he will live a better life by not doing wrong or by not repeating his wrong doing. Dr. Hobart Mowrer of the Univer sity of Illinois, countered that there was much to be said for permitting the patient to experience the concept of sin, to feel guilt, and to expiate it by his actions. He argued that sin does not doom a person to eternal neurosis or psychosis. He added that it only has this effect “ when it is felt but not corrected.” Whether Dr. Mowrer intended to or not, he was getting close to the Biblical view of sin.
