Embracing new materials with clients means spending a significant amount of time on due diligence research to justify their use to clients, while also taking on significant risk as these materials have not had the benefit of decades of use. This is worthy but is not the path we have generally taken. There is something to be said for a design pursuit that narrows rather than broadens the materials choices – to take advantage of our familiarity with the material to incrementally explore different aspects of it on different projects. *

LISA RAPOPORT , Chris Pommer and Mary Tremain, founded PLANT, based in Toronto, in 1994. PLANT is a team of 20 architects, landscape architects and designers. Research and critical thinking are fundamental to the way we work; we have done a lot of beautiful, weird and interesting things. Like a plant, we are deeply rooted with a strong sense of place; and we plant both flora and ideas in unexpected landscapes.
