FEATURE Long White Line Summer is for the open road . With long days, clear nights, and no snow falling in the high country, the highway beckons. Memories hover just beyond

the horizon, waiting to be made. So grab a friend—it’s time to pack the cooler. For some road trip inspiration, we asked four writers to head to destinations within reasonable driving distance of San Diego. They escaped to Monterey to see fish and eat seafood, to Sonoma for glamping and wine, to Las Vegas to explore the notorious party city while sober, and to the Coachella Valley in hot pursuit of the ever-elusive American Dream. You can follow their lead, or find your own asphalt adventure. California and its neighbors are full of funky roadside motels and campsites with sunrise views worthy of being engraved on the back of a state quarter. Map a route if you like, or let the wind blow you where it will. There’s really no wrong way to go—as long as you’re going. So charge the EV and get your playlists dialed in. Roll the windows down, and turn up the radio. (Or maybe keep those windows up so you don’t miss a morsel of podcast drama.) However you like to ride, it’s a good time to go.
