LEADERSHIP Max Goodwin attends international forum in Baltimore

In June, Year 12 student Max Goodwin joined Executive Principal Garth Wynne and Director of The Centre for Character & Leadership Darrell Thatcher travelling to Baltimore for the International Boys’ Schools Coalition (IBSC) conference.

helps out in the community and the company tries to establish and maintain a strong community presence. “The forum was really worthwhile because it broadened my mind on issues such as racism, and I really felt it increased my empathy,” says Max.

“We talked for hours in my group and had lots of informal chats about racism. Many of the boys had come up against racism and it was good to listen to their struggles and recognise their strengths in dealing with it. “I was also shocked to see suburbs where white flight had decimated

Max took part in the Student Forum giving him a great opportunity to mix with staff and students from schools from Australia, USA, India, Spain and the United Kingdom. Each boy had proposed an investigation, based on social and environmental issues facing society, as part of their application to attend. Max’s investigation was based on the imbalance of wealth in society, not simply in terms of finances, but also in terms of life skills. The forum provided an opportunity to further develop their investigations through conversations with other participants and also through the various activities they attended. These included trips to Washington DC and visits to Capitol Hill and the Museum of African American History, Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center to take part in environmentally-focused activities, and a walking trip around the city of Baltimore to learn about some of the social issues facing some cities today. It also included a visit to the headquarters of Under Armour, the American sportswear and clothing manufacturer, where each worker
