College – Issue 33

RUGBY The 1st XV reached the semi-finals of the UC championship for the second year in a row, after finishing second from round-robin play. The season started with a narrow one-point loss to Nelson College, which also doubled as a Moascar Cup challenge, before a succession of wins led to the historic victory over Christchurch Boys’ High School. This was the first time the 1st XV had won the Jock Hobbs Memorial trophy. The term ended with the Quadrangular tournament hosted by Nelson College. On day one, the 1st XV defeated Wanganui Collegiate to advance to the final but, for the second time in the season, the home team proved too strong and College was beaten. The final match of the season was a home semi-final against Timaru Boys’ High School (TBHS), who proved too strong on the day. While a place in the final of the UC championship still eludes the College 1st XV, they still enjoyed a successful season in 2017. The College rugby club had eight other teams in the Metro competition, with boys from Linwood College playing for the 3rd XV and U14B sides. Both U14 sides made their respective finals, with the U14A side winning their section and going through the competition unbeaten. During tournament week the U16 College side were involved in a Quad tournament in Christchurch and the U15 team travelled to Oamaru for the South Island tournament. Both teams produced some of their best rugby of the season. The U16 side had wins over John McGlashan College and St Andrew’s College, and a narrow loss to Nelson College, while the U15 side beat hosts Waitaki Boys’ High School and then TBHS to finish 5th overall.
