THE QUADRANGLE From the President
Although it is only October, it feels as if the Association has already packed a year’s worth of activities into 2017. This speaks to both the vibrancy of the Association and its branches, and also of the strong relationship we have with College. It also speaks to the hard work of our Secretary, Justine, for which I and the committee are always thankful.
the 20 year reunion was too long and it was important our younger Old Boys were in touch with College – and each other – at an earlier time. In November we will host the first YOBs event, open to all those at College in 2007. Our second new event is the Christchurch Long Lunch, to be held on Friday 8 December at The Christchurch Club, which is the ideal time to catch up with friends in the run-up to Christmas. In addition, the College Tuis will be looking to meet more regularly. Third, the committee has recently entered into a new arrangement with College regarding membership. From 2018, every boy who has spent more than a year at College, or who attended College in Year 13, will have purchased a Life Membership of the Association when they leave school. This will ensure all boys who attend College for over a year will become members of the Association. It will also simplify the administrative process of joining leavers as life members. Fourth, as mentioned further on in this issue of Quadrangle, the Association is looking to partner with College to provide career request for help on this. We also hope you will use the opportunity to update your details, so when the School List is updated for 2025 (College’s 175th anniversary mentoring to boys. We hope members will respond to our
or dodransbicentennial) we have something of a head start. As part of the Association’s attempts to both support College and lift the visible presence of the Old Boys, we have two new projects underway. The first will be a list of Past Presidents of the Association which will be displayed at College, and the second is a series of posters of interesting Old Boys. The first six of these posters will be developed for the start of 2018, with more to be added each year. We note two significant milestones this year. First, the Association is pleased to have worked with College to see the presentation of a Senior Honours Tie to Sir Terence Arnold (6983), former Solicitor-General and Judge of the Supreme Court of New Zealand. It was a great privilege to be at the Assembly where Sir Terence received his tie and spoke to the boys providing sage advice.
First, in addition to the various reunions that have taken place, we have had a number of successful branch functions. In New Zealand we have had functions – either co- hosted by College or on our own – in Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Marlborough and Central Otago. There have also been events in London and Melbourne, which takes the prize for being the most active branch having organised three get-togethers so far this year. Through to the end of the year, we are looking forward to branch events in Brisbane, Sydney and Hawke’s Bay, as well as our annual Gentlemen’s Lunch. The committee would like to thank all those involved in organising these events at the branch level. Second, the Association has two new events on the calendar. The first is Young Old Boys, or YOBs. The committee felt waiting until
Second, the appointment of Catherine McMillan as an Association appointee to the College Board of Govenors.
Catherine is the first non-Old Boy and first woman to be appointed by the Association. More than that, however, she brings much needed skills in charitable governance and accounting to the Board. Catherine replaces Tom Elworthy (9959), who deserves our grateful thanks for his service.
