Hundreds of Santas
Gramma Jazzy smiled.
“You must love Santa a lot,” notedThomas.
It was a chilly December Saturday afternoon, and Gramma Jazzy asked her grandchildren Chloe andThomas to help her carry several small packages down fromher attic. “Careful on the stairs,” she reminded them. “You sure have a lot of boxes,” saidThomas. “It says ‘fragile’ on all of them. What’s inside?”
“I do. He’s magical. I remember the first time I saw Santa. He came to our department store downtown. He was big and dressed all in red. Children kept pulling on his beard to see if it was real. He yelled ‘Ouch!’ every time! I was too shy to sit on his knee, but he let me stand and whisper in his ear. And you knowwhat? He listened.That was the year I asked for my special red cardinal.”
“I’mnot sure,” answered Gramma. And truth be told, she really didn’t. “Why don’t you two count them after we have them all set up?”
“We tried to last year,” Chloe reminded her, “but we kept getting mixed up after 200.”
Gramma laughed. “Maybe you’ll havemore luck this year.”
“Something that is my favourite colour,” smi- led Gramma as she patted her thick red hair.
“Where did you get all these Santas?” asked Thomas as they started opening the boxes.
“The one I put on your tree,” Chloe added proudly.
BeforeThomas could answer, Chloe shouted, “I know— it’s your Santa collection!”
“Oh, everywhere. I got some of themduring my travels. Most were gifts from family and friends.”
“Yes. Well, that’s the last box. Is anyone ready for a glass of milk and a snack before we set them all out?”
“That’s right. It’s time to set themup again.”
“Which one is your favourite?” asked Chloe.
“I am!” the children chimed.
“How many do you have?” Thomas wondered.
“I can’t decide; they’re all special to me,”
