“Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” (Authorized Edition of 19341, with verses from the Bible, in order that you may see that he; teach ings are contrary to the Scriptures, and that you, too, may have , "the light of life” which is the Lord Jesus Himself. Sin C. S.: “Man is incapab le of sin.” (p. 475) Bible: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” (1 John 1 : 8 ) CREDIT IS DUE Immediately after the sur render of Japan, the Canadian Pacific Railway, Steamship and Hotels Company, placed in the show window of their offices at 513 W. Sixth Street, Los An geles, a beautifully lettered pla card on which appeared the following words: Pax “Thou hast brought us peace in our time, O Lord, Therefore from our hearts we say Thanks be to God who giveth us the victory.” It thrilled the hearts of Chris tian passers-by to see a great commercial organization thus acknowledge God. We are re minded of a gracious promise in the Word of God: “Them that honour me, I will honour” (1 Sam. 2:30). Sickness C. S. “Man is incapable of sick ness.” (p. 475 Bible: "They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick.” (Mark 2:17) Death C. S.: “Man is deathless.” (p. 266) Bible: “ . .. as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that a 11 have sinned.” (Romans 5:12) The Shed Blood C. S.: "The material blood of Jesus was no m o r e efficacious to cleanse from sin when it was shed upon the ‘accursed tree’ than when it was flowing in his veins,” (p. 25) Bible: Jesus said, “This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remis sion of sins.” (Matthew 26:28)
Though there was no Inward heart change, there were outward changes, for I gave up one worldly amuse ment after another. As time went on, I became convinced that outward change was not enough, and that all was not well with my soul. When Dr. Robert C. McQuilkin conducted serv ices at the college, I had a conference with him. At the close of our con versation, he suggested that we pray. He prayed, but I could not. In the depths of my heart I still did not believe there was a personal God, arid, though I had repeated the Lord’s Prayer since childhood, I had never prayed spontaneously, for I did not know how. In the days that intervened before I was saved, my heart was very heavy. I had no peace in my soul. There certainly was no light there, for the light of the glorious Gospel of Christ had not yet shined through. I was in spiritual darkness, blinded by the god of this world. But on the evening of April 18, 1934, I was attending service at the Student Tabernacle, and there for the first time I realized there was a living Saviour who died for my sins, and that I desperately needed Him. A trans action took place . . . Quietly, with out emotion, in my heart I accepted Christ as my Saviour. During the time for testimonies I stood, with a song in my heart and praise to God on my lips, and testified saying, “Praise God, I know I’m a child of the King,” and “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth.” The Transformation From that time on, there was a change in my life. I had the assurance of my salvation. The bloody cross became the beloved cross, and all the Scriptures took on fresh meaning as I read them with new spiritual insight. The plan of salvation had never been clear before, but now the blindness was gone. Since that time it has been continuous joy, a joy that never changes materially, but only deepens day by day. God did not cease to work in our family, and, praise His Name, we are all one in Christ today. My brother is now preaching the Gospel he once despised. Truly God has done ex ceeding abundantly a b o v e a l l I could ask or think. To those who are seeking the truth about Christian Science, let me add a word to this story of my conversion. In my studies, I have discovered that Mary Baker Eddy denies the funda mental teachings of the Word of God. I now urge you who are in doubt to compare for yourself the following quotations t a k e n from her book,
One Sacrifice C. S.: “One sacrifice, however great, is insufficient to pay the debt of sin.” (p. 23) Bible: “But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of G o d . . . For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.” (Hebrews 10:12, 14) Did Christ Suffer? C. S.: “The eternal Christ never suf fered.” (p. 38) Bible: “For Christ also hath once suf fered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit.” (1 Peter 3:_8) Did Jesus Rise from the Dead? C. S.: “Jesus’ students saw him after crucifixion and learned that he had not died.” (p. 45, 46) “Hid den, in the sepulchre. ., he was alive.” (p. 44) Bible: J e s u s said, “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and be hold, I am alive for evermore.” (Revelation 1:18) “This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are wit nesses.” (Acts 2:32) is Jesus The Christ C. S.: “Jesus is the human man, and Christ is the d i v i n e idea.” (p. 473) Bible: “ ... this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Ch r i s t.” (Acts 17:3) “Who is a liar but he that denieth that J e s u s is the Christ?” (1 John 2:22) C. S.: “Jesus meant, not that the human Jesus ... is eternal, but that... Christ was and is so.” (p. 333-334) After “the Master’s ascension . . . Jesus disappeared while Christ c o n t i n u e s to exist.” (p. 334) Bible: “But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour.” (Hebrews 2:9) Saul said to the risen Christ, “Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.” (Acts 9:5) Is Heaven a Place? C. S.: “Heaven is not a locality, but a divine state of Mind.” (p. 29) Bible: Jesus said, “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so,' I would have told you. I go to ¿..epare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” (John 14:2, 3)
