The prophets declared that faith in Christ was both necessary and suf ficient for salvation, which could be obtained in no other way. Cornelius had sincerity of purpose, religion, and good works, but he needed personal faith in the Saviour. When instructed in this respect, Cornelius simply be lieved, and was saved then and there. Prophets, apostles, and the Lord Jesus Himself agree that faith is the one essential for salvation, and that it is within the reach of all. Points and Problems 1. "Of a truth 1 perceive that God is no respecter of persons" (v. 34). In God’s sight, one race or nation is not superior to another. This statement cuts straight across ideologies preva lent today, namely, that the color of 'man’s skin or the country from which he comes determines his worth. Lit erally, What Peter said was, “I per ceive that God is no accepter-of-a- face.” The mere fact that a person was a Jew or a descendant of Abra ham did not mean then, and does not mean now, that he has a special pass port to Heaven, or the first call upon God’s favor. God is not much con cerned about the look of a man’s face, but He is mightily concerned about the attitude of his heart. 2. "But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteous ness, is accepted with him" (v. 35). Some have sadly misinterpreted this verse and made it to teach that sal vation is by works of righteousness. This cannot be the meaning, for it will not harmonize with many other passages of Scripture which teach the exact opposite (e.g. Tit. 3:5), The ex pression ‘‘he that feareth him’’ is a common Old Testament reference to those who live in the will of God, or who are His saints. Such persons will work righteousness as a conse quence of “fearing him.” Works are an evidence of piety in the heart. 3. "To him, give all the prophets witness, that through his name who soever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins" (v. 43). In view of the occasion on which this mes sage was delivered, the word to be em phasized is “whosoever.” It is only the second time it is found in Acts. Its first usage, in 2:21, was the occa sion of Pentecost. In Peter’s time, his audience was mainly Jews. Now our churches are predominantly Gentile. The emphasis is on the fact that in God’s plan there is no distinction be tween Jew and Gentile. Furthermore, Gentiles do not have to become Jews in order to become Christians. Christ is the Great Leveler of all people, races, and tongues.
