that they might understand the Scriptures" (Lk. 24:45). How thankful we should be to God for His Word, the blessed revelation of His will. And as we search the Scriptures, and find in them counsel to guide us along the path of life, and to comfort us amidst its sor rows, let us lift our hearts in thanksgiving for such a book. Above all, let us believe in that living, loving Saviour which it reveals. Following Him, we shall not walk in dark ness,‘ hut shall have the light of life, and at last, through His grace, we shall safely arrive at Home. “A glory gilds the sacred page, Majestic like the sun; “ God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son” (Heb. 1:1,2). What is the meaning of the incarnation? The incarnation is nothing less than this: God in human articulation. God articulat ing! “ In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, . . . And the Word was made flesh and dwek among us.” Herein is the marvel and the miracle of the incarnation, not that God has sent a communication to man—He has done that through the pro phets—but something far more wonderful; God has come down in the person of His Son as the communication. It is not that Christ has brought us a message from God, but rather that He is God’s message, and more than that, He is God Himself articu lating His own message.— C olin C. K err . It gives a light to every age: It gives but borrows none.” —W . M. R obertson . JULY 5 God Speaks “ But now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; and the greatest of these is love” (1 Cor. 13:13). Patience is love on the anvil bearing blow after blow of suffering. Zeal is love in the harvest field, never tiring of toil. Meekness is love in company when it vaunteth not itself. Perseverence is love on a journey pressing on with unflagging step toward the end. Joy is love making its own sunshine where others see nothing but gloom. Power is love driving the soul’s chariot wheels over all opposition. Gentle ness is nothing but love in her own sweet voice and manner.— S elected . JULY 6 All-Inclusive

JULY 1 Joy Assured

"For our heart shall'rejoice in him, be cause use have trusted in his holy name* (Psa. 33:21). I know not what the day may bring Of joy or pain! I only know, O Lord, from Thee Comes naught but gain, And those who put their trust in Thee , Trust not. in, yain........ ....... And as I lift my eyes above T o heaven’s sweet light, I feel within my heart at length ’Tw ill all come right. The darkest cloud a lining shows Of silver bright. — K ate H opkins . “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousnessf” (Rom. 6:16). When we were servants to sin we were free from righteousness; we did not trouble about righteousness. What fruit had we then in those things of which we are now ashamed—bitter fruit indeed! Then let us not touch them again. Yield yourself wholly to God, and you will have your fruit unto holiness, “ and the end everlasting life.” Evan Hopkins used to express the truth thus: “ It is a crisis leading to a pro cess.” There must be adjustment before there can be holy living. An arm out of joint must be put back before it can be used. So the initial presentation, the happy adjustment, the new attitude of the heart to God, must precede the life of service. — G eorge G oodman . JULY 3 Christ’s Supremacy in the Soul “ And Mary said, M y soul doth magnify the Lord” (Lk. 1:46). “ He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30). The most glorious triumphs of Christ are spiritual, and His, noblest work is that wrought in the secret of the soul; not the conquest of kingdoms, but self-conquest; not the renunciation of anything external merely, but self-renunciation; not the con secration of substance, but self-consecration in the service of God and man—these are the hardest deeds to accomplish, the most divine attainments. They shine with the peculiar light of Calvary.—H. G rattan G uinness . JULY 4 Illumination ‘ Then opened he their understanding, JULY 2 Obedience unto Righteousness
