return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he toill abundantly pardon" (Isa. 55:7). I am sure that Peter, after the confession of his sin, still poured out his ardent affec tion and love on his Lord. I am sure in tones of infinite tenderness and sympathy he heard the Saviour’s voice telling him of forgiveness . . . Pour our your heart before Him, and He will be tender indeed; He will grant you an interview which shall issue in your being brave and strong, in going back to the old scene of failure a new man, a new woman, because the past has been forgiven. You. have the assurance that He will be with you to the end. —W . W . M artin . JULY 8 The Price o f Discipleship "And he scud to them all, I f any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Lk. 9:23). “ Take up thy cross,” the Saviour said, “ If thou wouldst My disciple be; Take up thy cross, with willing heart, And humbly follow after Me.” Take up thy; cross, nor heed the shame, And let thy foolish pride be still: Thy Lord refused not e’en to die Upon a cross, on Calvary’s hill. Take up thy cross, and follow Christ, Nor think till death to lay it down; For only he who bears the cross May hope to wear the glorious crown. —C. W . E verest . JULY 9 From Bane to Blessing “ For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” (2 C ot . 4:17). Ours is a God who turns swords into ploughshares and spears into pruning hooks; who converts instruments of destruc tion into implements of salvation. In Christ the blast becomes a blessing. By means of destruction comes deliverance. Out of deso lation arises a new prospect. Peace comes by way of conflict; new vigor springs out of human weakness; hope shines from despair, as stars glow in the darkness of the night; rapture becomes the fair flower of agony, and what seemed ignominious defeat is turned into glorious victory. — W . G rah am S crocgie . JULY 10 Our Victorious Saviour "Y e are of God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world" (1 John 4:4). At times we are apt to think that in this conflict against the world, the flesh, and the devil, we are fighting single-handed and unobserved; but it is not so, for there is on our side One by whom we are well able to overcome. And, be the enemy ever so power ful, ever so numerous, ever so malignant, we shall come off more than conquerors through, and on account of, him who loves us.— S. H. S train .

"W ho game himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works” (Tit. 2:14). The spirit of indulgence and the spirit of prayer cannot exist together. When you read the Scriptures you see a religion that is all life, and spirit, and joy, in G od; that supposes our souls risen from earthly desires, and bodily indulgences, to prepare for another body, another world, and other enjoyments. You see Christians represented as temples of the Holy Ghost, as children of the day, as candidates for an eternal crown, as watchful virgins that have their lamps always burning, in expectation of the bridegroom. But can he be thought to have this joy in God, this care of eternity, this watchful spirit, who has not zeal enough to rise to his prayers? — W illiam L a w . JULY 12 A Blessed Commandment and Privilege “Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should stn against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way” (1 Sam. 12:23 ). You like to read books about prayer. You reverence and love the men of prayer. You may be sometimes in positive despair about prayer, and yet you know, on the testimony of thousands, and on the assurance of God’s Word in endless places, that prayer is, of all things a mortal man can perform, by far the most blessed . . .There is no mystery about prayer—no mystery except its nearness, and its easiness, and its sureness, and its fruit fulness, and its supreme, immediate, and everlasting blessedness. Begin to pray. — A lexander W h yte .
