Photography as an art form Deemed the selfie-obsessed generation, we’re more skilled with a camera than ever. But what does this mean for the value of photography in the world of art?
“I use the base photograph as a foundation and use it as a map to lead me through the image and process.” – Raphael Mazzucco This collection sees the artist utilising foraged organic materials such as foliage, rope and feathers to create texture within the artworks, watching the final masterpiece blossom with every addition. The use of organic materials underneath his signature layers of resin brings a degree of spontaneity to the work, and results in a three-dimensional look and feel. Giving photography a contemporary twist with Raphael Mazzucco As a celebrated fashion photographer, Raphael Mazzucco takes a modern twist on using stills within his art. Layering photography, paint and text, each final piece becomes a visual narrative. After two years in the making, Raphael Mazzucco has released his new collection, Gaia . Titling his collection after the ancient Greek deity revered as ‘Mother Earth’, Raphael has encapsulated the beauty of our planet and those who inhabit it through the power of photography. The images taken by Mazzucco truly empower the female form demonstrating beauty in strength. Starting with a tank of water, Ernest drops in the coloured ink, which dances gracefully under engineered lighting. As music plays in the background, Andy photographs the composition – with no certainty as to how the finished image will look.

Celebrity Photography With Hollywood collectors such as Claudia Schiffer and Rod Stewart, Simon Claridge is no stranger to the celebrity world. Collaborating with Playboy and 20th Century Fox among others, Simon selects photography that captures many cultural icons from fashion, film and music – including Marilyn Monroe. To add Hollywood sparkle, Simon overlays his silkscreens with his signature diamond dust, transforming the piece in different lights.
From Ansel Adams’ photographs of romantic American landscapes to the celebrity snapshots of Herb Ritts, the art of photography has evolved for the digital age. With camera phones making the medium more accessible and filters, lighting and effects available at the touch of a button, artists are now able to manipulate a scene to tell their chosen story. Here at Castle, we relish the opportunity to work with talented photographers. Far from tarnishing the prestige of photography, modern technology is opening up a world of opportunities.
