SCARLETT RAVEN

Black Poppy , Scarlett Raven & Marc Marot

Scarlett Raven creates her tactile art using Windsor & Newton paints. She often uses her hands to apply it in thick layers – an approach that adds texture and depth to her paintings. Her artworks are alive with movement captured by splatters and flicks of paint. The artist explains: "The movement must be in every layer, so when you step back you feel like the landscape is alive. It's the magic of knowing that something beautiful is about to happen." Scarlett’s favourite colours are Cobalt Turquoise Light, Cobalt Violet and Quinacridone Magenta. For anyone who would like to try her hands-on approach, she advises to use barrier cream to protect their skin.

XUE WANG

SCARLETT RAVEN & MARC MAROT PRESENT

Xue Wang’s pop surrealist pieces take between 80 and 120 hours to complete in her studio at home. The artist uses oil-based paints on board, which provides a perfect surface for meticulous brushwork and allows her to add multiple and detailed layers. She starts with the background and moves on to construct the main scene and details in the foreground. To finish her paintings, she applies multiple layers of glaze. She explains: “For each character, I first sketch out the simple faces. Then I add makeup, hairstyles, clothes and accessories – a bit like when you style a real person! During the process, I develop ideas about the atmosphere for each individual. This comes naturally with my fashion background."
