The Teacher demands that we take up the cross and so follow on, even though the progress be through pain. More—we must take the deep spiritual vow of poverty, re nouncing all as possessions, counting every word He shall speak, and every truth He shall reveal, through whatever methods, as our chief and only wealth. In short, we must not be held, either by being possessed by others or possessing aught. There must be a clean severance from all entanglement, and an utter uncompromising abandonment of ourselves to Him. Unless this is so, we cannot be His disciples. —G. C ampbell M organ . “As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the 'vine; ho more can ye, except ye abide in me” (John 15:4). Prayer is as much greater than all other works as God is greater than man. When man prays God works. Cut the nerve of prayer, and what is left, however seem- ingly great, the achievement is purely hu man—which means “ self” with all its evil brood.............The preacher, missionary, or other Christian, whatever his position, who fails to pay the price of prayer, and who does not habitually draw deep from the wells of prayer . . . will never escape the judgment of fruitlessness, be his talents what they may.—F. J. H uegel . Men point to the sad incidents of human life on earth, and they ask, “Where is the love of God ?” God points to the cross as the unreserved manifestation of love so in conceivably infinite as to answer every chal lenge and silence all doubt forever. . . . The crowning mystery of God is Christ, for in Him “ are all the treasures of wis dom and knowledge hidden.” And those hidden treasures are yet to be unfolded. It is the divine purpose to “gather together in one all things in Christ.” Sin has broken the harmony of creation, but that harmony shall yet be restored by the supremacy of our now despised and rejected Lord. —S ir R obert A nderson . FEBRUARY 15 Abiding in Prayer FEBRUARY 16 Certain Deliverance “Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God” (Rom. 8:21). “ Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sake, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory” (2 Tim. 2:10). The reserve that would spare this life from suffering for His sake is the cause of a lost life. The loyalty that puts Christ first, even in the face of the loss of all, even life itself, finds its reward in a “saved” life. “Who redeemeth thy life from destruc- **on.". ^°H°WS “Who forgiveth all thine in iquities” (Psa. 103:3,4). In proportion as our lives are surrendered to Him, and filled with His Holy Spirit, in that proportion will we realize that salvation of which our Lord speaks. A saved life is incomparably FEBRUARY 17 Saved to Suffer
