Returning to school positive step for Hawkesbury resident
Two years ago, Hawkesbury resident Amanda Darling found herself at a crossroads. The single mother was unemployed and had little prospect of finding a jobwithout a high school diploma. At 20 years old, she knew a high school diploma was the first step, but Darling had no credits after a failed high school experience in Quebec. Moving ahead with the required 30 credits part-time was a daunting prospect. “Because I knew how many credits I needed, it bummed me out,” said Darling, now 23. “I didn’t want to be getting a high school diploma at 40.” “Raising a daughter without an education isn’t easy,” she added. “Nobody would hire me. All declined because I didn’t have my high school diploma. Clara was my biggest inspiration for schooling. I figure if I can better my life, I can better her life.” In December 2013, Darling enrolled in the TR Leger School of Adult, Alternative and Continuing Education. Two weeks in, her instructional assistant told her
about a program called the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition Program (PLAR). PLAR is a provincially approved initiative that awards up to 26 credits to mature students based on practical knowledge assessments and life experiences. Darling undertook equivalency assessments that allowed her to gainmath, English, science, history and geography credits. In just a fewweeks she found herself with 26 credits. While it found it tough returning to school, Darling found the adult education environment a good fit. She enjoyed the self-directed learning approach, finding it less distracting and better suited to her individual learning needs. “It’s better because there is one-on-one support when needed, but with independent learning, I was able to focus,” she said. It took her two years to earn the four credits she needed. She finished at TR Leger in April, and graduated in June. In April, the owner of a local pharmacy
Community grants offer The Canada Post Community Foundation for Children is taking applications for grants. Deadline to apply is midnight, April 11. The foundation provides grants to eligible registered charities, non- profit community groups, district school programs, and youth and amateur sports groups. This year’s foundation grants fund totals $1.1 million. Last year the foundation provided grants for more than 100 projects in all 10 provinces and the three territories. Grant funds are raised through an annual five-week national campaign through local post offices via on-site donation boxes, sales of a special stamp, and also through approved employee contribution programs. Funds stay within the province or territory where they are collected. Grant applications are made online at www.canadapost.ca/ community and undergo a review process. – Gregg Chamberlain

hired her. In February, Darling began an online course in Early Childhood Education at Algonquin College. Long-term plans include taking a university program in hopes of becoming a social worker and opening her own daycare
for high-needs children. “I’m more focused now,” Darling said. “Before, it was living day-by-day and whatever happened that day happened. Now I’m thinking about my future and my daughter’s future.”
