Discussing Knee PainWith As you will see on the next page, knee pain can be the result of many different problems. Often times it is secondary to degeneration or a meniscal tear. I’m asked frequently what is the best treatment for these conditions? Should I have injections, oral medication physical therapy or arthroscopic surgery? A study in BMJ June 2016 concluded that patients with degenerative arthritis or meniscal tears will do just as good in the long termwith exercises vs having arthroscopic surgery. So rather than having an expensive and invasive procedure, the patient should be on an exercise program instructed by their physical therapist for their knee. The therapy often is a slower process, but in the long term, your benefit is greater! MIKE SAVAGEAU, PT
