F ebruary marks the start of the days of festiv- ities and fancy dress, songs and dances; days that celebrate life, good company and beauty - the days of the Mimosa Festival! For those who might not be aware, this is a festival that everyone who waves a mimosa branch becomes a part of; everyone who dances, enjoys nibbling fish and sip- ping wine on the riviera, the smells and tastes of the Bay of Kotor, smiles and hugs, and the energy of the thou- sands of people who come from all over the world to ex- perience Herceg Novi. And that’s how it’s been for more than half a centu- ry, or more precisely since 1969, when the mimosa re- ceived its own holiday based on the idea of tourism work- ers seeking to make Herceg Novi a tourist centre beyond the summer tourist season. This little yellow flower be- came the symbol of Herceg Novi, the herald of spring, while news of the festival spread like magic throughout Yugoslavia and around Europe. Guests arrived from all surrounding countries, but also from other European countries, only for the passing years to bring yet more guests from all other parts of the world. The beauty of seaside life, together with the scent of flowers, continues to this day, and with an even rich- er programme. This year’s 55 th Mimosa Festival gets un- derway on 15 th February, when a masked procession, to the accompaniment of city music and majorettes, pa- rades through the streets of Herceg Novi to announce the start of the carnival in the city. The formal opening ceremony and a concert of Halid Bešlić are scheduled for the very next day, 16 th February. That same day will also mark the start of a two-day Wine Fair held in the luxu- rious surroundings of the Lazure Hotel, as well as the traditional three-day Exhibition of Flowers. The Great Feast of mimosa, fish and wine, extending from Kum- bor to Baošić, is on the programme in the morning hours of 17 th February, after which the fun continues with the great masked ball that will include more than a hundred masks. For all those wanting a good time under an open sky, a concert by Croatian pop star Indira, formerly of dance trio Colonia, will be organised. All carnival groups of the region will participate in the formal closing cere- mony of 2 nd March, together with the Carnival judging and a concert by Croatian rock band Prljavo kazalište.
U februaru počinju dani od fešte i maš- karanja, pesme i plesa, dani kojima se slavi život, druženje i lepota – da- ni Praznika mimoze! Za one koji to možda ne znaju, reč je festivalu čiji deo postaje svako ko mahne grančicom mimoze, svi koji zaplešu, svaki zalogaj ribe i gutljaj vina na rivijeri, mirisi i ukusi Boke, osmesi i zagrlja- ji, energija hiljada ljudi koji dolaze u Herceg No- vi sa svih strana sveta. I tako duže od pola veka, tačnije od 1969. go- dine, kada je mimoza dobila svoj praznik na ide- ju turističkih poslenika koji su hteli da od Her- ceg Novog naprave turistički centar i van letnje turističke sezone. Žuti cvet postaje simbol Her- ceg Novog, vesnik proleća, a vest o festivalu širi- la se ondašnjom Jugoslavijom i ostatkom Evrope kao magija. Gosti su stizali iz svih okolnih zema- lja, ali i ostalih evropskih država, a potom, kako su godine prolazile, i iz svih ostalih krajeva sveta.

Lepota života kraj mora uz miris cveća traje i danas, uz još bogatiji program. Ovogodišnji 55. Praznik mimoze počinje 15. februara, kada maski- rana povorka, uz zvuke Gradske muzike i pratnju mažoretki prolazi ulicama grada i najavljuje kar- neval u Herceg Novom. Već 16. februara predviđe- no je svečano otvaranje i koncert Halida Bešlića. Istog dana biće otvoren i dvodnevni Sajam vina u luksuznom ambijentu hotela „Lazure“, kao i tra- dicionalna trodnevna Izložba cveća. Velika Fešta od mimoze, ribe i vina, od Kumbora do Baošića, na programu je 17. februara u jutarnjim satima, a veselje se nastavlja velikim maskenbalom uz vi- še od stotinu maski. Za sve one koji žele provod na otvorenom biće organizovan koncert hrvatske pop zvezde Indire, pevačice nekadašnjeg benda „Colonia“. Sve karne- valske grupe iz regiona učestvovaće na ceremoni- ji svečanog zatvaranja 2. marta, uz suđenje Kar- nevalu i koncert „Prljavog kazališta“.
