RITAM SRBIJE / RHYTHM OF SERBIA

MUSEUM OF YUGOSLAVIA, BELGRADE The Museum of Yugoslavia is dedicated to the preserva- tion and interpretation of the complex heritage of Yugosla- via. Exhibits preserved here relate to all stages of the devel- opment and subsequent decline of Yugoslavia – from the emergence of the initial Yugoslav idea, via the creation of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and the Socialist Federal Repub- lic of Yugoslavia, all the way to its collapse and the accom- panying rise of the phenomenon of Yugo-nostalgia. The mu- seum complex comprises the presidential residence, the old museum of Yugoslavia (showcasing state gifts) and the 25 th May Museum, where exhibitions are staged. The former residence of the Yugoslav president, better known as the “House of Flowers”, was converted into a museum following Tito’s death. Among other items, it houses his grave, which is still visited annually by thousands of admirers of his image and work. Also exhibited here are the famous relay batons that were presented to President Tito by Yugoslav pioneers, youngsters and various associations each year on 25 th May - the country’s Youth Day and the president’s birthday.

AERONAUTICAL MUSEUM, BELGRADE Prior to 1957, when the Museum was established, there had been multiple at- tempts to create an institution that would endeavour to collect and preserve all valuable items that formed part of the history of Yugoslav aviation. It was back in 1911 that Strahinja Ban Nušić, son of famous Serbian satirist Branislav Nušić, took a section of the rib of one of the wings of the plane of Edvard Rusjan fol- lowing the pioneering aviator’s fatal crash at Kalemegdan fortress, which he gave his mother to protect before departing to fight in World War, telling her that it would be a valuable exhibit in the future Aeronautical Museum. And his words would prove prophetic. That very section of the Merćep-Rusjan aero- plane would be among the first items included in the collection of the museum. The number of collected aircraft increased over time, and the value of the col- lection thus also increased constantly. The permanent exhibition, which covers an area of almost 6,000m 2 on three levels, presents the development of more than a century of aviation, from the pioneering period to the modern era.

MUSEUM OF KNITTERS, SIROGOJNO

The women of the mountainous Zlat- ibor region have always processed wool and knitted blankets, clothing and warm socks for their nearest and dear- est. And it was several decades ago that they joined forces to produce tens of thousands of unique sweaters, jack- ets, coats and caps for the world fash- ion market, which were joyfully worn at fashion shows and presented in the window displays of exclusive boutiques around the world. It was in honour of these anonymous women that were written about by the world’s top fashion magazines that the Museum of Knit- ters was established in Sirogojno. Apart from awards, it preserves letters and photographs of Jovanka Broz, Barbara Bush, Nancy Reagan and other famous personalities who had at least one item from the collection of Zlatibor’s knitters.
