This artist, who was known for not beautifying reality and for hav- ing a short temper, was resident in Malta for a brief period in the early 17 th century, after he fled Rome fol- lowing his killing of a man in a duel. He requested to join the order of the Knights of Malta, which the pope ul- timately approved. It was here that he painted his work The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, which you can still admire in Malta. However, the paint had barely dried when the cantankerous Caravaggio, who was always ready for a fight, wounded a knight and fled the island. As we strolled the cobbled streets of Valletta that are filled with tour- ists even during winter, I tried to spot some falcon flying overhead, because as a crazy film fanatic I couldn’t help but think of the Maltese Falcon and Humphrey Bogart. And despite that film having been shot in San Fran- cisco, it is nonetheless true that Em- peror Charles V “rented” Malta out to the Hospitallers for a price of one Maltese falcon a year. The precious statuette was actually a John Huston fiction, but I still didn’t spot a falcon. Nor did I come across a Maltese dog, because - despite the name - those dogs don’t even come from Malta! While we’re on the topic of films,
and the island of Malta provided the backdrop for almost the entire film. But we’d fantasised enough already, walked and enjoyed ourselves, and the time had come to return to our ship, which was preparing for a “day- at-sea” during which we would sail without making landfall, until we reached Barcelona. ON THE HIGH SEAS In all honesty, I enjoyed this day because there was no hurrying and rushing around. It had been wonder- ful to see Palermo and Malta, but re- laxing is also wonderful. And that’s particularly s you’re your ship has sev- eral swimming pools, a zen zone with hot tubs, deckchairs overlooking the sea etc. Alongside all that wonderful stuff, our favourite place aboard the ship was the “World Promenade”, a
one café owner proudly told us that it was right there on his beautiful is- land that the Count of Monte Cris- to was filmed. When it comes to the most recent film version of this sto- ry, starring Jim Caviezel, the Mal- ta shoot was planned to last five days, but the director and produc- ers fell in love with the island and extended their stay to five months,
