TikTok will partner with Oracle in the United States after Microsoft loses bid Washington, D.C. / Hong Kong (CNN Business)TikTok and Oracle will become business partners in the United States — a deal meant to satisfy the Trump administration's national security concerns about the short-form video app, according to a person familiar with the matter
"The news comes after weeks of speculation about the Chinese app's future in the United States. President Donald Trump has demanded the app be sold, or else shut down in the United States.
The exact nature of the agreement between TikTok and Oracle (ORCL) remains unclear, but it was not described as an outright sale. The news about Oracle came just after Microsoft announced that it will not buy TikTok's US operations from ByteDance.
IIn a statement, Oracle confirmed it is part of the proposal submitted by ByteDance to the Treasury Department in which it will serve as the "trusted technology provider." ByteDance has not responded to a request for comment. TikTok declined to comment.
States and other western countries, becoming the first Chinese social media platform to gain significant traction with users outside of its home country. It was downloaded 315 million times in the first three months of this year — more quarterly downloads than any other app in history, according to analytics company Sensor Tower.
A Controversial App: TikTok has exploded in popularity in the United
But Trump and other US politicians have said the app poses a threat to national security because it could be used as a spying tool by Beijing. Authorities have also expressed concern that it could be used to collect personal data on US citizens, or censor speech deemed to be sensitive by the Chinese government.
TikTok has denied those allegations. The company has said its data centers are located entirely outside of China and that none of that data is subject to Chinese law.
The agreement with Oracle comes days before a ban on TikTok in the United States was scheduled to go into effect. After September 20, the Commerce Department is expected to clarify which types of business dealings involving TikTok will be prohibited in the country, according to an executive order Trump signed August 6. It's not clear whether TikTok's partnership with Oracle would allow the short-form video app to avert that ban. The scope and language of the order, along with Trump's own remarks about TikTok, have led to confusion about how a ban would be implemented. In another executive order, Trump said TikTok had until November 12 to find a buyer. Separately, a TikTok employee has challenged the looming ban in federal court and is seeking a judicial decision to suspend the August 6 executive order. A hearing to consider the plea is scheduled for Tuesday. TikTok has also sued the Trump administration over one of the orders, calling it "heavily politicized."
Structuring the deal
Much about the exact nature of the agreement between TikTok and Oracle is still unknown. But experts have pointed to other partnerships between US and foreign companies that were vetted by authorities as potential templates. When the Japanese tech conglomerate SoftBank acquired a 78% stake in Sprint in 2013, the two firms agreed to several conditions to address national security concerns. A new member of Sprint's board was appointed to oversee national security compliance. The US Defense, Homeland Security and Justice departments were also given the power to review and veto deals for certain kinds of equipment.
The focus for ByteDance and Oracle will be on "oversight, transparency and how they structure it for Americans involved and the information they have on Americans," said James Lewis, a senior vice president at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a think tank based in Washington, D.C. Lewis was an adviser on the SoftBank-Sprint deal. He added that an "intermediary entity" could be created to examine ByteDance's relationship with TikTok. The agreement could also involve limiting what information ByteDance has access to, or putting approved Americans on the company's board. Even if a consensus is reached on how this partnership should be structured, the Oracle- TikTok agreement will still be incredibly complicated, according to Harry Broadman, partner at Berkeley Research Group and former member of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, the government body that vets certain deals that could give a foreign investor control of a US business. Tensions between the United States and China are continuing to rise ahead of the US election in November. The US government has taken aim at several Chinese companies — from TikTok to Huawei and Tencent's WeChat — that Trump has accused of threatening national security. "We're in a different territory where national security issues, particularly with personal information, have risen to the fore," Broadman said.
A loss for Microsoft Oracle's apparent victory is a blow to Microsoft, which had been gunning for TikTok for weeks. Multiple analysts had described Microsoft's pursuit of TikTok as a potential "coup" — an opportunity to scoop up one of the world's fastest growing social media platforms at a time when TikTok may be desperate to make a deal. We are confident our proposal would have been good for TikTok's users, while protecting national security interests," Microsoft (MSFT) said in a blog post Sunday. "To do this, we would have made significant changes to ensure the service met the highest standards for security, privacy, online safety, and combatting disinformation, and we made these principles clear in our August statement." Walmart (WMT) had also been participating in negotiations with Microsoft over a potential deal. The retailer had said it was interested in how TikTok could have bolstered its access to consumers. Walmart on Sunday told CNN Business that it "continues to have an interest in a TikTok investment and continues discussions with ByteDance leadership and other interested parties." "We know that any approved deal must satisfy all regulatory and national security concerns," the company said in a statement.
Chinese state media on Monday pointedly reported that ByteDance would not sell TikTok's US operations to Microsoft or Oracle. State broadcaster CGTN added that ByteDance would not "give the source code" to any US buyers, citing anonymous sources. It's also not clear how much say Beijing will have in the arrangement. Last month the country revised rules that govern the sale of certain kinds of technology to foreign buyers. The updated list includes data processing, speech and text recognition — the kind of tech that experts say is used by TikTok. While those notices did not name TikTok or ByteDance, experts have pointed out that the rule change would likely require ByteDance to obtain government permission before it could sell TikTok to a foreign company. China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs declined to comment about the Oracle partnership when asked by reporters at a regular press briefing on Monday, and instead reiterated longstanding criticisms about the US government's campaign against TikTok. "Without any evidence and under the pretext of national security, they abuse state power and conduct unreasonable suppression and intimidation of non-US companies that have achieved a leading edge in a certain field," spokesperson Wang Wenbin said. "We will firmly support relevant companies to safeguard own legitimate rights and interests."

The bottom line: Only 30 % of Asian Americans said they ' ve received " a great deal " or " some " contact from the Democratic Party in the last year . 40 % said they have been contacted by Republ icans at any degree .

Every year , I ’ m sure we meet a lot of people who decide to start exercising or taking group classes – or going on a strict , strict diet . These are al l great , but a word of caution is not to overestimate how healthy you can suddenly become . Just because a new year has started doesn ’ t mean your sel f - control can handle 5 - 10 health - related habits on the f ly . Work your way up , and start as big ( or as smal l ) as you need to .
Aim for 7 hours of sleep a night Exercise at least 5 times a week Stop using your phone and computer after 9 : 30PM Drink 2 l iters of water every day Eat vegetables every day Eat dessert once every two weeks EXAMPLES OF HEALTH GOALS I ’ m a huge sleep zealot , so my goal every year is keep doing what I do when it comes to making sure I get my 7 hours of sleep per night . I ’ m even wondering i f I need to make a goal out of helping other people meet thei r requi red sleep hours . So many friends of mine woe over the fact that they get l ittle to no sleep .

But in the past , I ’ ve found that I often said no to events “ just because . ” Sti l l , whi le there ’ s nothing wrong with skipping out on a party of two , I know that deep down I real ly want to go to some of them . Besides , there ’ s also the added benef it of networking at these parties , which I ’ ve found is crucial for solopreneurs l ike me .

One of my biggest goals ever is to attend the Gi rlboss Ral ly . Whi le I ’ m not sure I can actual ly attend this year , one of my goals is to at least save up the money for a ticket as wel l as the lodging and travel expenses . Then maybe I can attend sooner rather than some distant future I haven ’ t even identi f ied .
4. SPIRITUAL GOALS
The thing about spi ritual goals is that there ’ s no concrete way to know i f you ’ re on track with them – but you def initely feel thei r strong effects when you l ive your l i fe trying to meet these goals . I ’ m Cathol ic , for example , so I l ike to maintain a regular confession for my spi ritual ( and , as I ’ ve found , emotional ) health . Once , I fel l out of my regular confession routine for months , and I noticed my l i fe getting a lot drearier , I was more anxious than I had to be , and I was making bad decision after bad decision . But when I picked it up again ? I was genuinely , inexpl icably happier , had better sel f - control , and was a better friend to everyone around me . Even i f you don ’ t bel ieve in one certain faith right now , try and experimenting this year . You might be surprised at the change spi ritual ity brings in your l i fe .
Okay , okay , before anyone with no taste for rel igion shuns me away for suggesting this , just hear me out .
Spi ritual ity is di fferent from rel igion , though the two
intertwine in that rel igion leads to a spi ritual l i fe and a spi ritual l i fe might even lead to rel igion . You don ’ t need to have some big conversion . You don ’ t even need to be a big bel iever in anything just yet . But I ’ ve found that when you put your faith in something a lot bigger than yoursel f – l ike God or the Universe or whatever you want to cal l it – there ’ s a huge shi ft in your l i fe that you suddenly can ’ t l ive without .

5. FINANCIAL GOALS
As a budding solopreneur , you ’ l l want to set some money goals . And the reason I mention this so late in the post is because I bel ieve that al l the other goals up there – personal development , health , etc – are important to set as foundations . Financial goals l ike hitting a revenue goal or a savings quota brings a lot of pressure , especial ly i f you ’ re looking to achieve big growth in 365 days . But when you put money goals f i rst , I ’ ve found you become a slave to money . Suddenly you can ’ t buy the things you love indulging in because you ’ re a few dol lars short of your weekly budget . Or you ’ re working long hours and weekends just to take on more cl ients and hit that sales target . So before you set your f inancial goals , get those foundations in place . That way, you can adjust these arbitrary goals – l ike money and business – to how you want to be l iving your l ife versus adjusting your l ife according to how much money or how big a business you want to have. Save 10 % of income every month Fund a weekend solo trip to Japan Open an investments account , depositing 5 % of income each month Find 2 new cl ients for your side hustle this month Reach 100 , 000 savings goal EXAMPLES OF FINANCIAL GOALS
As for me this year , I intend double my savings from 2019 by the end of the year . I ’ m happy with where I am f inancial ly , but I want to chal lenge mysel f to f ind ways to double my blog income . So that ’ s why I ’ m exploring possible new income streams , both di rect and passive . Though I always advise others to set a speci f ic number for a goal , I haven ’ t f igured out what these new income streams might be for me . So I ’ l l cross that bridge and set those numbers when I get there .
Right now , my goal is to explore 2 - 3 new income
streams . Once I f ind what I l ike ( or what works – or both ! ) , then I ’ l l get to setting those numbers .
And since my mom was a f inancial advisor , she ’ s
convinced me to start putting aside money into investment accounts . So I ’ l l be putting aside a fraction of my earnings to these investments .

Whether you want to start a prof itable blog or launch a freelance career , you ’ re going to want to set business goals . Treat whatever you do as business – calculate expenses , make revenue goals , and get the necessary help you need from friends and mentors . Has anyone of you seen such a dream? Do we ever think what that one thing which drives our life is? What is that parameter which inspires us to move forward with our ambitions? What is that one attribute of our life which keeps on boosting us to follow our goals? Everyone has a different attribute towards this. Each one of us is driven by some of the other factors in our life. So let’s see which are these factors and then find out which one implies to us.
If someone asks me that what is my most memorable childhood memory, I would narrate my one dream which was always with me, whether I was sleeping or awake. The dream was: I am dressed up in a business suit and sitting on the back seat of the car reading the newspaper and the driver is driving my car. This was a dream which never allowed me to sleep and this dream became true when I became the Training Manager for an organization and got a traveling role. The only difference was that instead of a newspaper I had a laptop in my hand.

These people dream of doing something and then their thought process moves in the same direction. They are ready to do sacrifices, ready for all the oppositions and always come out of the comfort zone to achieve what they want. Here I would like to tell you one more secret about these people. They love taking small naps. Do you know why? They are not feeling sleepy; rather they want a few minutes to visualize their dream to keep them focused.
These people will work only with deadlines. They will not touch the work until they know that the deadline is approaching. They might take it easy all the time, but when the deadline comes, they will put their whole energy, whole day and night to complete it but keep to the commitment. They are committed, people. 2 . DEADLINES
These people set up their standards, give themselves a target and take small steps each day to reach there. They will keep on thinking about the strategies which help them to achieve the milestone. And once they achieve it, they will set up new goals and new milestones. 3 . REACHING A MILESTONE
These people do everything for their desired lifestyle. They are fond of luxury cars, different cuisines, they want their clothes dry-cleaned, and they love branded clothes. So the price tags of the brands become their motivation to work and achieve what they want. 4 . LIFESTYLE
These people love to be recognized among other people, they want to feel on the top of the world so they keep doing remarkable things in life because once they are recognized, and they become more confident to move further 5 . RECOGNITION
They are the crazy people who are mad about something. If they think that they want to do, they will not quit without doing it. I have heard many stories of people who in spite of facing disasters in life decided to climb the mountains and they achieved it. They are mad but this madness makes them a pioneer in whatever they do and thus become a role model for many. 6 . MADNESS

I recently wrote an article on the differences between a business and a brand. Today I want to talk you through the initial steps that you can take to build a brand, not just a business. Building a brand is not something that happens overnight. It’s something that evolves over time and will continue to evolve as your business grows. There are however steps that you can take initially in order to build a brand that sets you apart from others in your field. I go into some of these steps below. 1. GET CLEAR ON YOUR STORY The first is to get clear on your story. Stories give a brand personality. Your story is what makes you different. Your story will provide an emotional connection with your audience. You might be thinking, but I haven’t got a story. Believe me, we all have a story. The best way to start to build your story is to think about your why. Why are you in business? More often than not, it’s because you have been where your ideal clients are now. You’ve been through what they are going through and you’ve come out of the other side stronger. You now want to help others to learn from your mistakes. The second part of building an online brand is to know what makes you different. What sets you apart from others in your industry. 2. DEFINE YOUR USP
Yes, your story will set you apart but what is it about your business that sets you apart? I set myself apart from other branding designers by utilising my marketing expertise to help increase my clients visibility.
3. CREATE A BRAND MESSAGE
Next, you want to have a clear brand message. A brand message is something that I go into more in this post, however, in short, a brand message is a clear and concise statement that explains what you do, who you do it for and why or how you do it.
For example, my brand message is:
" I help online business owners transform their business into a brand by defining their brand, increasing their visibility and growing their audience."
The first bit is the who, the second is the what and the final part is the how.
You want to make sure that your brand message is integrated in all that you do. Your website copy, your social media posts, emails to your email list etc … Ensure it’s consistent across the board.
4. KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE
Before you build and market your brand, you need to know who you are talking to. Too many business owners create content without knowing enough about their ideal clients and what their pain points are. As a result, their messaging comes across as unclear and this will confuse your audience.

When I think back to the times where I was really struggling with my body image and weight, I remember that I didn’t really take time to properly take care of myself or my needs. From the ages of 20- 23 years old, I was rail thin, depressed, anxious and literally wasting away. From the ages of 24-26, I was obsessed with my body image and binged on foods endlessly. This unhealthy relationship with both food and my body led me into on and off bouts of depression and severe anxiety. My mind was consumed with food and exercise, and I didn’t make time for anything else. During my recovery process, I learned about self-care and the various forms it comes in: everything frommeditation and reading self-help books to restorative yoga and seeing a therapist (who helped me more than I ever thought I needed). There were times I thought I’d never get over my eating disorder or be okay with my body and the skin I was in but along the way, I believe it was the simple forms of self-care that encouraged me to keep reaching and trying to get better. I learned how to be okay with who I was, even in moments where I felt like giving up. I was afloat, I wasn’t giving in, and I knew I could only get better if I really gave myself what I really needed.
Over the years, I’ve learned that practicing simple and inexpensive forms of self-care every day has enriched my life in ways I never expected they could. I feel more authentic and happy and I’ve learned to respect my body (cellulite and all!) I no longer count calories. I don’t freak out when I go to restaurants. I don’t have a panic attack when I can’t get
in a workout. I’ve learned to live a balanced life when it comes to my relationship with food.
You see, when you balance rest, eating, work, and fun, you are an example for healthy living. When you treat yourself with kindness, even in times of doubt and hurt, it inspires compassion and understanding. Today on social media we see endless hashtags and stories of how women are out there taking care of themselves. But are we really giving ourselves what we need or are we simply doing it to ‘gram about it later? Do we take of ourselves because we want to, or do we take flower baths because it’s trendy? A valid question, don’t you think? I wanted to create this 7 day self care challenge in partnership with siggi’s to inspire you in all areas of your life. I want to encourage you to practice self- compassion in a digital world that sets a constant standard of perfection in all areas: bodies, careers, motherhood, exercise, food, etc.
This challenge is proof that you don’t have to spend money or a lot of time each day taking care of yourself.
Simply offer yourself a little bit of kindness and forgiveness every single day for a week. Allow the judgements to pass and try to practice giving yourself what you need in all areas of your life. You don’t have to put it on Instagram or get super fancy — this is just a challenge for you and you only.
Set the tone of your week by planning healthy meals to enjoy and stocking your fridge with better-for-you snacks you can take on the go. Having meals prepared ahead of time is a great way to feel less overwhelmed when it comes to food. I suggest my blueberry overnight oats for breakfast, my thai quinoa salad for lunch and my best chicken soup ever for dinner.
Monday: E A T W E L L + N O U R I S H .
Snack suggestions: My favorite protein-packed snack lately is siggi’s new SIMPLE SIDES with no- added-sugar toppings. I tried them for the first time a couple of weeks ago and fell in love. The honey yogurt with dried figs and walnuts is SO GOOD! And the vanilla
yogurt with dried coconut and cacao nibs makes a wonderful healthy dessert. What’s great about these little treats is that they make wholesome, on-the-go snacking a no brainer, allowing me to focus on the rest of my busy day. Go on and give these a try on day 1 of your challenge!
Tuesday: T E C H N O L O G Y D E T O X + F I N D Y O U R C R E A T I V I T Y .
Put down your phone and turn off the TV. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sat on my phone endlessly scrolling or googling random things that pop into my mind. It’s amazing how many other things you could be out in the world doing, or even spending time with the people you love.
Today I encourage you to put away your phone, shut off the TV and connect with your creativity. Color for an hour, listen to music, read a book that’s been sitting on your shelf for too long, go to a cat cafe, paint — do anything that feels creative and interesting for you. You’ll see that nothing will change if you don’t have your phone, in fact, it can be liberating. P.S. here’s a really good playlist that I love.
Wednesday: P A M P E R Y O U R S E L F .
This is by far my favorite way to give myself a little TLC. Take a warm bath with epsom salts, put on your favorite playlist, use a fun scrub to give yourself a little massage, light a few candles and simply try and relax. If you have extra time, treat yourself to a 15 minute DIY face mask — you’ll have fun mixing all the ingredients together!

Developing a simple nighttime routine for yourself is such a wonderful way to wind down for the evening and create a peaceful sleep environment. Today encourage yourself to set a little time aside to do a nice skincare routine, drink a cup of tea (golden milk latte, anyone?), read a book for 30 minutes and maybe even put some essential oils into a diffuser next to your bed. Zzzzzz, and you’re out!

It’s the weekend and it’s time to celebrate your body by treating it good. Exercise creates feel-good endorphins and sometimes it only takes a little bit of movement for us to feel a little happier. In fact, did you know that exercise can be an effective treatment for anxiety and depression? I encourage you to do something that involves moving your body today. Perhaps picking a new spot to hike, walking around the city, biking on a new path, going to a yoga class, rock climbing or even doing a workout class you’ve never done before. Challenge yourself to move and get your blood flowing — you’ll feel great doing it. My favorite exercise lately has been yoga.

Treat yourself to something good today. Is it an ice cream cone? A glass of rosé? A pedicure? A trip to Whole Foods? A haircut? Shaving your legs? Putting new sheets on the bed? Maybe get that soft robe you’ve been wanting? Ordering a fancy coffee? A trip to Target, perhaps (ha!).
Whatever feels good to you, do it. Treating yourself is something we should do and not feel guilty about it.
