CIPPAPPOINTS SAMANTHA JOHNSONAS POLICY LEAD

THE CIPP is delighted to welcome Samantha Johnson as CIPP policy lead from 12 April 2021, following her role with global manufacturing company JCB, where she headed up the payroll and HR shared service team. Leading the CIPP policy team, comprising Lora Murphy and Gemma Mullis, Samantha will be responsible for representing members and the wider payroll profession at various government consultation forums, as well as promoting the role of payroll through various articles and events. Sam has an unwavering passion for payroll and is an advocate of raising the industry’s profile across all organisations and sectors. She sees the opportunity to join the CIPP as a “dream come true”, an opportunity to help support payroll professionals thrive in this challenging, complex and deadline-driven profession. Sam graduated in 2008 with honours from the University of Leicester, having spent three years studying law. It was with Leicestershire Police where her payroll career started; processing pay for both Leicestershire and Derbyshire constabulary. Her introduction to payroll was guided by mentor and manager, Yvonne Fish, whose knowledge, expertise and support turned what was supposed to be a stepping-stone to finance, into a career dedicated to payroll. This introduction has since encouraged Sam to recruit a number of team members who are new to the industry, mentoring and training the next generation of payroll. In 2016, Sam successfully achieved the CIPP Foundation Degree in Payroll Management. The skills she gained from her studies played a big part in a number of initiatives she supported and delivered with JCB. Her analytical and problem-solving skills helped raise the payroll profile within the organisation, and in 2017 her team were recognised both internally and externally after winning the CIPP In-House Team of the Year award. Sam’s role with JCB also saw her lead the implementation of a new payroll and HR system. It was this project that saw her take a leading role across several HR systems initiatives, such as the introduction of a ‘People Dashboard’ demonstrating the power of big data to an organisation. Outside of work, Sam lives with husband, Michael. She loves musical theatre and is a keen traveller.
