THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU ARE THE KEY

On my first day in the lumberyard, I met the yard boss, Darrel Moser. I was 18 years old and, as you would expect, I had no experience. Darrel had this look, sort of staring at you with one eye over the top of his glasses, eyebrows arched, and a cigarette hanging from his mouth. He peered at me and said, “There’s a broom out back. Go sweep the yard.” What he didn’t have to say out loud was “Boss’s kid, eh? Meh!” But that’s how I interpreted the look. My dad, Dick Lierz, and his business partner, Bud Fisher, started the company in 1976. While I was sweeping the yard, they were scrambling hard for business, working to entice the homebuilders of Boise into buying something from Franklin Building Supply. It was small. My mom, Yvonne, and Anne Fisher worked here, too. All hands on deck! Everyone in our home learned to convert board feet early in life. I have worked with a lot of people over my career at Franklin, and I have learned from them all. Darrel Moser taught me how to build loads, operate a forklift, load a truck, and get every usable inch out of a warehouse. Dan Parks taught me to buy products and merchandise a store. Stan Buscher taught me the secrets of keeping the wheels of the largest single lumberyard in the state on its tracks every day, and I watched in awe as Erick Wadsworth worked his sales magic like no one I had ever imagined. From Dan Otero, I learned the importance of building a web of connections. I could easily list hundreds of names here and describe what they taught me. I’m not going to try. I want you, my fellow Franklin employees, to know not who they are or what they taught, but rather why the people connections matter. When it comes down to it, the only thing that matters about this company is the people. From Fruitland to Pocatello and from Elko to McCall, we are an ever-evolving collection of people. My dad is a smart guy, but Franklin isn’t the successful company it is because he discovered a game- changer in lumber distribution. What he did from the beginning, and what he passed on to the rest of us, is to recognize the importance of people. Any business with a service mission relies on people. It’s difficult to imagine a more service-centric mission than “We Make Building Easy.” Forty-six years ago, our mission was “Where Service is a Habit.” You can’t get that done without top-performing people. More to the point, it takes

great cooperation and trust between the people to bring it all together. It’s not always easy. People can be complicated. We

don’t all think alike. It can sometimes seem as if our priorities are not aligned. When that happens, it helps to have invested in building

trust and cooperation. I learned early not to doubt the motivations of my coworkers. I might need to improve my communication or be more transparent in detailing the plan. Listening to others was often a big step. I didn’t have all the answers. The point was that we could get where we needed to go as a team if we trusted each other and cooperated along the way. After all these years, working alongside so many good people, riding the waves, and surviving the troughs together, I admit it is daunting to think about stepping into retirement and leaving all of you. So, when I was looking for someone to take the reins of the company, it was at the front of my mind that we needed a leader who had a core belief in the importance of people. We have that leader in Levi Smith, our CEO. I couldn’t be more comfortable, or excited, about Levi’s leadership and the future of our employee-owned company than I am right now. My last day as an employee of FBS is Dec. 15. I’ve learned a lot from you over the years, and I’m grateful for that. I know some of you have learned from me, too. If I could give you one piece of parting advice, it would be to always be striving to learn new things. My final ask is that you pay attention to your people connections. Nurture trust and cooperation with everyone around you. It will pay off more than you know. I’ll see you around.

HIGH FIVES

SAFE From: Jeff Ward, Boise To: Fruitland Door Shop

area to help me while I nurse a strained shoulder. Never saying no and always ready to learn whatever comes his way, he has been awesome in the three months he has been here! Thank you, Jordan, for being a team player! GUIDE

Hello, I would like to give a safety high-five to the crew in the Fruitland Door Shop! There is a tangible sense of joy among the crew and a smoothness to the operation as a result of many incremental improvements. Under the leadership of Ian Beane, the entire staff has taken a holistic approach to achieving excellent production results while keeping the crew happy. One of the key components, Ian explained, is balancing the workload throughout the week. Too much work on one day creates a rushed atmosphere, and it leads to a tired crew the next day. If there is a last-minute job someone wants to add to the day’s production, Ian will ask the employees if it can be done safely before saying yes. Communicating clear expectations of what needs to get done for the day allows the staff to set a sustainable pace and avoid being in a rush. This also answers the question of, “Did we win today?” The neat and orderly condition of the shop is a result of engaged employees who truly care, and it eliminates many hazards when there is a “place for everything.” Ian and I overheard jovial laughter among the crew as we were talking, and Ian remarked, “That is the greatest reward of all, happy employees.” STRIVE

From: Alex Evans, Caldwell To: Jim Priess, Caldwell

Shoutout to Jim Priess, one of our owners who’s been with this company for 25 years, installing and continuing to wow our customers. I received a very pleasant phone call from one of our consistent builders, Mr. Mike Milward, who informed me that Jim and his crew did an excellent job installing a unique garage door. The door is a very unusual size of 24 feet long by 8 feet tall. Jim not only did everything necessary to complete this installation in outstanding condition and in incredible time, but he also went above and beyond in taking care of Mr. Milward. Mike said, “Jim and his crew did an outstanding job; he deserves extra recognition for this installation. Keep up the good work, team.” WOW

From: Dustyn Casady, Boise To: Tristan Schneider and Cody Casady

Caldwell Tristan Schneider and Cody Casady generously donated their time to help the LEAN Coordinator for installed sales. With their help, we were able to complete or make great progress in four LEAN projects. That same day, they also helped unload and put away a truck order for Overhead Door. I was impressed and grateful for the work we completed. And by helping complete the LEAN projects, they have taken part in creating a more LEAN workspace.

From: Derek Taylor, Boise To: Jordan Crow, Boise

I would like to give a high-five to Mr. Jordan Crow. He has been such a huge help these past two weeks. He’s gone out of his load building

Spotlight on Eric

SPOTLIGHT ON ERIC Setting Franklin Building Supply Apart From the Rest For eight years now, Eric has made Franklin Building Supply an enjoyable place to work and has made such an impact on our customers. As an inventory controller at the Burley location, Eric’s passion for his role is apparent in the way he carries out his day-to- day operations. He even motivates other team members around him and consistently delivers the best customer service to our clients. Eric is a problem solver and enjoys helping others, whether they be fellow team members or customers. Wherever he can, he lends a helping hand and ensures no stones are left unturned. In addition to that, he continually finishes the job to the best of his ability and takes ownership from start to finish. Eric uses LEAN principles to keep the yard organized. When doing counts, he pulls items that have been returned to the wrong spots

and moves them to the correct locations, which really helps with sales and building orders. When he’s not at work, Eric enjoys writing and purchasing vintage, out-of-print books — both of which provide the perfect escape to kick back when he’s not working. Eric, we thank you for making Franklin Building Supply an enjoyable and successful experience for our clients. Your devotion, friendliness, and professionalism set you apart, and we appreciate you!
