VETERANS DAY

Before there was ever Polaris Injury Law or Lingenbrink Cazares, there was the Army and the Air Force. Devin served in the United States Army from 2001 until she retired in 2021 out of Fort Huachuca, AZ. As an active-duty Army nurse, Devin deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan at the very beginning of each conflict. At her retirement from the Army, Devin remarked that her time in uniform was hard work, but the relationships and camaraderie in service of our country filled her heart and soul. “I come from a family that modeled service to God, country, and people. My dad was drafted during Vietnam and then served 23 years in the Army; my mom served four years in the Army, and then worked for 20 years as a special education teacher’s aide; and I just completed 20 years in the Army as a nurse in 2021. I never realized how well my background as an Army nurse would translate into working in a personal injury law firm. However, it has been a true honor to talk with our clients who are going through medically difficult situations and see them on their journey to recovery.” The value of service to our nation is an inherited trait in Chris’ family. His dad, David, retired from the Navy after almost 30 years of service, and his brother, Duston, a naval academy graduate, retired after 20 years of service.

“The Air Force gave me so many great relationships and experiences. I never wanted to stay on active duty, because I had dreams of serving my local community as an attorney. Every experience I had while in uniform has only allowed me a greater opportunity to serve my community out of uniform. My military service has been a blessing and I am grateful for my time serving.” It comes as no coincidence that Devin and Chris have turned their passion for service to Polaris Injury Law. Firm founder Steve Lingenbrink built a law practice geared toward adding value for each and every client through expertise, hard work, and earning great results. At first glance, it may not seem an obvious choice for either Devin or Chris to move into personal injury. Protecting our nation safeguards the very fabric of our great country in hopes that there is never harm to the ideals and the people. In personal injury, we see injury to innocent people. The feeling behind both actions comes down to having the heart to help our fellow person. From every single person at Polaris Injury Law, we thank all the veterans who have donned their uniforms to help our county. We salute you!

A DAILY DOSE OF GRATITUDE

RAISING THANKFUL CHILDREN

Most parents want their kids to view Thanksgiving as a meaningful event — not just an opportunity to indulge in turkey and mashed potatoes. Unfortunately, most kids’ eyes will glaze over when their parents launch into a lecture about thankfulness. You will likely find better success by emphasizing the value of gratitude all year long. “What do you say?” It’s a question we all ask our young children after someone does something nice for them. This practice instills good manners, but it shouldn’t be confused with teaching gratitude. Imparting the meaning behind the words “thank you” takes something more. If you want grateful children, you need to be grateful parents. Consider how you can incorporate gratitude more into your everyday life. Are you as thankful as you should be? Do you repay favors and write thank-you notes? Do you regularly talk about why you’re so fortunate or what you’re thankful for? Cultivating gratitude in your life sets a good example, and many studies show it benefits your mental health as well.

Next, consider how you can encourage your child to reflect on who they’re grateful for. Acts of kindness and returning the favor to those who have been good to us can inspire kids to put their gratitude into action. Doing some yardwork, sharing a toy, or making a painting as a gift can help children understand how powerful it can be to outwardly show our gratitude for the people who are in our lives. Consistency is the most crucial factor, so try to find ways you can incorporate gratitude into your everyday routine. Children of any age can keep a gratitude journal with their parents’ help. Some families also use a gratitude jar where each family member can write what they’re grateful for on a slip of paper and add something different to the jar each week. It’s the perfect way to keep gratitude front and center.

These lessons may not sink in immediately, but by cultivating these positive habits in our everyday lives, you will see a big difference in the long run.

BREATHE, STRETCH, AND STRENGTHEN

When it comes to developing a workout regime that works for you, it’s essential to make sure that you’re balancing your routine throughout the week to ensure that you don’t experience mental or physical burnout. You may have already found a mix of weightlifting and cardio that works for you, or you may be trying to work through some kinks to figure out an effective routine. In either case, it’s important to remember that yoga can benefit your fitness and workout plan. Yoga is known to strengthen muscles, improve balance, increase flexibility, reduce stress, relieve anxiety, and improve posture. However, when combined with your other forms of exercise, your physical wellness and capabilities are expanded. Let’s take a look at some of the most significant benefits yoga offers to your current workout routine: Strengthen Your Core and Structure By performing multiple yoga poses, you’ll work muscles you didn’t even know you had. You’ve likely heard that yoga focuses strongly on your THE BENEFITS OF ADDING YOGA TO YOUR WORKOUT ROUTINE

core muscles, but connective tissue, respiratory muscles, arm muscles, leg muscles, and even the tiny muscles in your fingers are worked through practicing yoga. You’ll surely notice a difference in your performance in other activities and daily life! Improve Mobility and Flexibility As we age, it becomes more challenging to do all the activities we used to, simply because our flexibility and mobility decline. Yoga allows us to build our flexibility back up to become more nimble and agile while embracing control and a wider range of motion, enhancing your cardio and weight- lifting exercises. Boost Confidence and Motivation Adding variety to our physical activity routine is paramount to keeping things interesting. By incorporating yoga into your exercise routine, you are sure to feel the confidence that your mind and body need to flourish, helping to keep you motivated, challenged, and ready to tackle each workout without getting bored or burnt out.

RIGHT PLACE, RIGHT TIME

LATE-NIGHT DRIVER BECOMES A SUDDEN HERO

Nicholas Bostic had a heated argument with his girlfriend one night, so he went out driving around to clear his head and relax. Little did he know he would become a hero that same night. During his drive, he witnessed a raging fire that had engulfed a family’s home. Bostic stopped his car and ran inside despite the flames. He immediately began yelling for anyone since no one appeared to be inside the house — not even emergency personnel. His cries woke up 18-year- old Seionna Barrett, the oldest of five children, and she gathered her siblings together to exit the home. Bostic ran to Barrett and her young siblings, and he helped her take the children outside. But Barrett then told Bostic that her 6-year-old sister wasn’t with them. Without a second thought, Bostic again entered the home, hoping to rescue the little girl. The fire continued to spread quickly, and Bostic described it as a “black lagoon” of smoke on the ground floor. He checked all of the bedrooms but couldn’t find the little girl. Then, as he approached a window to exit the home, he heard a child’s cry. Bostic then had an internal conversation with himself: He knew the child needed help, and although he was terrified to go back downstairs through the fire and smoke, he wouldn’t quit. After wrapping his shirt around his mouth, he ran through the home, following the girl’s cries for help. Once he found her, he picked her up, ran upstairs, and jumped out the window onto the lawn. All of the children were safe and suffered no injuries. Bostic received first-degree burns and severe cuts on his arm. He was airlifted to the nearest hospital once first responders arrived at the scene. Bostic’s cousin created a GoFundMe to pay for Bostic’s medical bills, and it collected $556,000.

Today, Bostic is healthy and healing. He now has a new perspective on life and is looking forward to whatever his future might hold.

STEVE’S CORNER:

STEVE LINGENBRINK IS THE FOUNDING PARTNER OF POLARIS INJURY LAW, FORMERLY LINGENBRINK LAW AND LINGENBRINK CAZARES INJURY LAWYERS.

Everyone in the state of Washington is required to have car insurance if they own a vehicle. In a time when savings are closely tied to the bottom line of every family’s household, the chance to lower your insurance costs is likely a trap. Underinsured and uninsured motorists are the most heartbreaking stories in our office. Aside from the nuances of the law, every personal injury case has two components: medical treatment and insurance coverage. A personal injury case doesn’t exist if someone isn’t injured. Likewise, suppose a driver is underinsured or uninsured, and they do sustain a bodily injury. In that case, the ability for medical providers to give necessary treatment is not only compromised, but it may also be non-existent.

Maria was driving south on the 405 next to a commercial 18-wheeler. She didn’t see the impact of the truck crossing into her lane. She just saw the front end of her vehicle change directions while she heard the sound of her car crush beneath the weight of a tire. Her front end continued to turn, colliding with several vehicles until it smashed against the freeway barrier. The last thing she saw was concrete. Maria gained consciousness a week later while at a local hospital. She has difficulty remembering things in the months since the wreck; she gets headaches at work and inexplicably snaps at her family. She had never heard of a traumatic brain injury. The treatment for her broken bones and the hospital stay took

every dollar of her policy which was the state minimum of $25,000. The other driver had the same. Her medical bills total over $500,000. The best advice I’ve ever heard regarding insurance was: buy insurance from a reputable company, from an agent you trust, and more than you think you need.
