Message from Mayor Lisa M. Gillmor

Dear Santa Clarans,

Happy Fall Season! It was wonderful to see so many of our Santa Clara residents at the Magical Bridge opening and at our recent Art and Wine Festival in Central Park. There’s something truly special about coming together as a community during these festive events, and it radiates a sense of belonging and connection among us. With the arrival of fall, I’m excited to dive deeper into our neighborhoods and connect with even more residents across all corners of our city. This season brings with it a fresh opportunity to share thoughts and concerns face-to-face, as

well as gather your creative ideas on how we can continue to improve our beloved Santa Clara. Every conversation is a chance to explore what’s possible – whether it’s enhancing our parks, revitalizing community events, or addressing local needs. President Faye Brings Senegal’s Tech Ambitions to Silicon Valley I had the honor of greeting President Bassirou Diomaye Faye when he recently visited the United States and stopped in Santa Clara, in his quest to strengthen partnerships and explore opportunities for Senegal’s digital transformation. He was

accompanied by high-ranking officials, including the Minister of Communication, Telecommunications, and Digital Economy, and the Minister of Finance. During their visit, which included Nvidia’s global headquarters in Santa Clara, they met entrepreneurs, visited tech companies, and met with representatives from academia to discuss future collaborations and initiatives to support Africa’s economic and technological growth.

President of Senegal Bassirou Diomaye Faye

Bassirou Diomaye Faye is the newly elected president of Senegal, marking a significant moment in the nations’s political history. His rise to power was dramatic, transitioning from being a political prisoner to becoming the head of state in a matter of weeks. His victory in the 2024 elections, securing over 54% of the vote, made him the first opposition candidate to win a first-round election in Senegal since its independence in 1960. The election also came on the heels of widespread protests demanding political reform and transparency. His significance to Senegal today lies in his commitment to anti-corruption and economic reform. His election has inspired a sense of pride and hope among young Senegalese voters. October Safety Spotlight: Protecting Our Community Together

October is National Fire Prevention Month, making it the perfect time for our community to revisit safety and preparedness practices. As the cooler weather approaches and we begin using heaters and fireplaces, it’s crucial to ensure our smoke detectors are functioning properly and our emergency plans are up to date. The City of Santa Clara is committed to promoting safety for all residents, and we encourage everyone to take advantage of local resources like free safety inspections and emergency preparedness workshops. In addition, with Halloween just around the corner, let’s also keep our neighborhoods safe for our youngest residents. This means being mindful of

traffic safety, keeping walkways well-lit, and reporting any suspicious activity. Together, we can make Santa Clara a safe and welcoming community for everyone.

In closing, I encourage everyone to embrace the spirit of the season – take a stroll through our beautiful parks, enjoy the vibrant colors of autumn, and don’t hesitate to reach out as I look forward to hearing from you. Let’s continue to work together to make Santa Clara not just a place to live, but a community we all love to call home. Wishing you a warm and wonderful Fall Season! Best,

Mayor Lisa M. Gillmor

Visit SantaClaraCA.gov/BikePedProjects for more information. Imagine A Day Without Water: Oct. 17 Nearly a million Californians lack access to safe drinking water. This Oct. 17, commit to keeping our drinking water clean:

1. Go organic in the garden. Minimize synthetic fertilizers that contaminate soils, harming people, plants and wildlife. Organics support healthy ecosystems. 2. Use plant-based products. Petroleum-based soaps and cleansers damage aquatic ecosystems. Renewably resourced plant-based products biodegrade naturally, having minimal environmental impact.

Keep our Drinking Waters Clean

3. Avoid PFAS. Toxic “forever chemicals” show up in water repellant and non-stick products, food packaging, cleaning products and most types of artificial turf To date, Santa Clara has not detected PFAS in our water supply. Minimizing PFAS products decreases their potential to leach into our drinking water. 4. Drink Santa Clara Water. Reduce plastic pollution that contaminates our community and environment by switching to tap water. Visit SantaClaraCA.gov/WaterQuality for more information.

Santa Clara Water - 130 Years Strong

Santa Clara began delivering water to the community in 1894. In celebration of their 130th year, Water & Sewer Utilities branded their high-quality drinking water, showcasing the new look at the recent Art & Wine Festival. Their eye-catchingly oversized Water Quality Report Card detailed Federal and State standards that the City’s water surpasses, while the new brand logo attracted desirable attention and questions. The Tap Water Express provided water to attendees, who were encouraged to continue hydrating locally by choosing Santa Clara’s superb tap water over less frequently tested bottled water of unknown origins. The Department continually advocates for sustainability in multiple ways; switching from bottled to tap water tops their list in protecting our planet from plastic pollution.
