NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE (NEC)
CANADIAN ELECTRICAL CODE (CE)
The NEC is the primary electrical code used in the United States. The most recent revision of the NEC is the 2020 edition. States and local municipalities determine which edition of the NEC they are going to use and if they are going to be more or less restrictive. The NEC comes out with a new edition every 3 years. Most areas do not use the 2020 edition, and some municipalities use a variance of the national code. Some areas use the 2008 edition, some use 2014, etc.
The CE Code is very similar to the NEC and is used throughout Canada. Provinces and municipalities deter- mine what edition of the CE Code they are going to use and some minor modifications may exist. None of the modifications are known to impact Byrne products. The CE Code requires that products be tested and labeled by a certified test lab to appropriate Canadian Standards Association requirements.

CERTIFICATION BODIES
The NEC requires that products be tested and labeled by a certified test lab to NEC requirements.
The following are companies that Byrne uses to obtain certification and examples of relevant marks: LISTED RECOGNIZED (UL) UNDERWRITER’S LABORATORIES UL certification database: go to https://iq.ulprospector. com/info/, sign in and search for “Byrne Electrical”
A certification body, also known as a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL), is a 3rd party company that is authorized to test to the codes/standards. If a product passes their test, they can apply their certification mark. Listed products are considered safe to use on their own (when correctly installed) and do not need anything else to provide protection or safety. • • Recognized components are considered safe to use when installed with additional parts or protection. These require further investigation to assure the additional parts or protection provide the needed safety.

MUNICIPAL CODES
City Of Chicago Chicago does not allow the use of Manufactured Wiring Systems or Modular Office Furnishings. All receptacles in office furnishings have to be installed by licensed electricians. Byrne offers a UL Listed Outlet Box designed to slide into our mounting brackets. Electricians then provide the wire, conduit, connectors, and receptacles. Listed Furniture Power Distribution Units (FPDU’s) are UL or ETL Listed cord and plug accessories. Most of our products with a standard 15A plug, including Pattern, Sequence, IQ, and Twine are FPDU’s. Listed FPDU’s can be used in the city of Chicago as long as they are installed on Listed freestanding furniture that can be repositioned by users. This Includes tables with built-in casters. The maximum cord length is 9 feet.
First, NYC does allow the use of Office Furnishings Systems as permitted by Article 605 of the NEC, but requires that licensed electricians install the electrical components in the furniture. NYC does NOT allow the use of any non-metallic liquid tight conduit. Metallic liquid tight conduit can only be 18 inches long and there is a 6-foot restriction on the use of flexible metal conduit infeeds. As of 2009, NYC allows the use of Relocatable Power Taps and Furniture Power Distribution Units in office environments. NYC officially does not permit the use of Manufactured Wiring Systems below the ceiling.
All electrical accessories used on fixed tables and unlisted (or non- Listed) modular furniture are required to be metal hardwired accessories.
San Francisco San Francisco uses the California Electrical Code. The
California Electrical Code uses the NEC (see above). San Francisco has additional/revised requirements that are called out as an addendum to the code. San Francisco does NOT allow the use of non-metallic liquid tight conduit. City Of New York (NYC) NYC uses a version of the NEC (see above) with additional / revised requirements spelled out as an addendum to the code. There are two areas of the New York Code that affect Byrne Product listings.
INTERNATIONAL FIRE CODE (IFC) This is a more restrictive code that potentially impacts only corded Byrne accessories. Municipalities that follow this code require that a circuit breaker be a part of every Relocatable Power Tap (RPT) or Furniture Power Distribution Unit (FPDU). Known municipalities that follow this code currently are; Los Angeles, San Francisco and Charlotte North Carolina. The application of this code has been sporadic, but users still need be aware of this requirement.
