Finding the middle ground
The COVID19 pandemic has brought hardship to the Canadian population as well as to the population worldwide. Health Canada issued directives early on, asking the population to confine in their home in order to prevent the spread of the virus. The citizens heeded the directives in large numbers while some individuals rejected the directives. We have now been in confinement for six (6) weeks.Once this directive is liftedby theprovincial governments, the most pressing question will be: How do we get back to normal life? For those citizens who obeyed the confinement directives and haven’t had any human contact from the onset, getting back to normal life will be challenging. Fear will set in, and the transition to what our life was prior the confinement will be difficult. On the other hand, citizens who chose not to comply with the directives will not see any changes in their routine, except the increase number of people everywhere. I think there is a balance between these two extremes. Knowledge of what a virus is by educating ourselves, reading on the topic on reliable and different medium and listening to radio and television programming on the issue should give us some comfort and alleviate our fears. For example, in my clinic, having been educated in sterilization and disinfection techniques, my fears of this virus are non-existent. I have confidence in the science and the steps that we take daily to ensure the elimination of infection. I often treat patients who are infected with a virus and/or bacteria and have never been infected, nor has my staff or other patients. Of course sick patients should stay home but when an emergency arises, we treat them. Knowledge of precautionary measures to eliminate infections is what we do. Knowing how to do so is important. Getting back to your normal life and into society and having confidence in the public and in businesses is equally important for yourself and others. My daughter told me recently that she is fearful of returning to school; fearful of catching the virus and even worse bringing it back home. She is very mindful. I assured her that the first few weeks will be uncomfortable. But with the guidelines I gave her, she is confident at protecting herself and others. Here are a few guidelines: • A virus has to penetrate into your body to take effect • Therefore, eliminate the potential for the virus to penetrate into your body • The most common places for the virus to penetraite your body is through your nose, eyes, mouth, possibly ears, a wound and other private areas • Not touching your face and washing your hands well tremendously reduce chances for the virus to penetrate your body Here’s a link to standard practices. https://www.ccohs.ca/oshanswers/diseases/ good_hygiene.html
