4.7.3 Modern influence Modern-day Türkiye is heavily influenced by the Ottoman Empire; this is visible in its architecture, culture, and political system. Despite its Islamic foundation, the Ottoman Empire tolerated other religions, a legacy seen in Türkiye’s secularism and tolerance. The empire’s vast reach extended its influence across the Middle East, including its practice of allowing some self-government. Although not perfect, the Ottoman Empire ranks with the Roman and Byzantine empires as one of history’s most powerful and enduring empires, serving as a major link between East and West for centuries. Islam is one of the world’s great religions. It has more than one and a half billion followers, making it the second-largest religion in the world. As seen in SOURCE8 , most Muslims live in the Middle East and Africa, but
