However, not all scholars agree. The dagger is suggestive of the ancient Roman Lucretia, who killed herself to protect her family’s honour. There is also a myrtle bush that represented Venus, the goddess of love. In the foreground is the text ‘brighter is the virtue reigning in this beautiful body’, which is an adaption of text from Virgil’s Aeneid .
