Take notes on your findings and organise them under headings similar to those below. • Name: • Birth–death: • Contributed in the area(s) of:
• Historical significance: • Faced challenges in: Step 2: Using historical sources
As you research a significant female figure from the Renaissance, focus on primary sources. Use online resources to find accounts of her life in different stages. Look for both negative and positive depictions from other sources. Renaissance paintings can also serve as primary sources. Consider how the subject is portrayed. Analyse how each historian’s background and values might influence their view of her. Organise your findings in a table, noting the reasons behind each historian’s position. Step 3: Historical perspectives and interpretations Think carefully about the primary sources and historical interpretations in your notes. Assessments of your chosen Renaissance woman are often diverse, influenced by the people around her, such as family members and social context. Questions to consider: • Did the authors of the primary sources have first-hand knowledge of the person you’re studying? Can their claims be verified? • What do the historical interpretations reveal about the attitudes of historians? How have these interpretations changed over time? • What can historians learn from studying this woman’s life about the role and position of women during the Renaissance? Step 4: Communicating Reflect on your study, read through your notes and make three strong claims about the significance of her life. Write each claim as a statement, supporting it with evidence (whether from primary sources or historical interpretations). Analyse each claim to explain its importance. Review and revise your claims as needed.
