6.6.3 Language and religion Today, around 550 million people speak Spanish, but fewer than ten per cent of those people actually live in Spain. It is the official language in Mexico and most of Central and South America, and is widely spoken in the United States. Most of the world’s Spanish speakers live in the Americas, except for Brazil where, due to the Treaty of Tordesillas, Portuguese is spoken due to Portuguese colonisation.
