7.3.1 Geography and climate The harsh geography and climate in Scandinavia greatly impacted Viking life. Limited farming areas and bitter cold dictated where they lived and what they ate. These conditions drove their greatest legacies: travel, trading and conquest. Much of Norway and parts of Sweden are mountainous and rocky, making farming difficult. Crops need arable land, and animals need accessible food sources.
