the Tokugawa sh̄ogunate differ from the armour used in earlier periods?

The term samurai means ‘those who serve’. Samurai were more than warriors; they were dedicated attendants to their daimȳo lord, following a strict code of conduct and routine. Samurai were paid by the daimȳo to control their lands, swearing an oath of loyalty in return. Beyond fighting in conflicts, they managed estates, collected taxes and maintained order among peasants. During the warring states period, the daimȳo depended heavily on their samurai for protection and to secure their interests. Samurai boys were raised to become professional soldiers. Shortly after birth, they were given a small sword in a special ceremony, symbolising their future role. Samurai women were also expected to embody courage and honour, though their education focused on becoming loyal wives and mothers. They were trained to manage households and take charge during their husbands’ absence in wartime, ensuring everything was kept in order until their return.
