This alternative view of the universe was presented by the Polish astronomer and mathematician Nicolaus Copernicus (see section 10.9.1). From about 1507, Copernicus’s calculations convinced him that the Earth rotated on its own axis and that it rotated around the Sun, which was the real centre of the universe. He spent much of the next 30 or more years working on this theory but he delayed publishing his ideas because he feared that the Church would call him a heretic. The theory was ýnally presented in his book The Revolution of the Heavenly Bodies , which was published in 1543 as he was dying. Like other scholarly books of the time, it was written and printed in Latin. In Copernicus’s diagram, sol means Sun and terra means Earth.
