14.12.3 How to prepare for volcanic eruption Can volcanic eruptions be predicted? What are the warning signs? How can the risk of death, injury and damage be reduced? With about 500 million people living close to active volcanoes, it is important to monitor changes in seismic activity, prepare emergency plans, and try to predict eruptions to give residents time to evacuate safely.
