SkillBuilder discussion Communicating 1. Study FIGURES5 and 6 . List in order the five largest cities by population from Australia and the USA. 2. Explain why America’s tenth largest city is so much bigger than Logan City in Australia. 3. Propose why Australia has such relatively large cities (Sydney and Melbourne) compared to the USA, which has a much larger population. United States Eleven conurbations have been identified in the United States (see FIGURE 5 ). The major conurbation is in the north-east region. It is often called BosNYWash because it covers the area from Boston in the north, through New York, to Washington, DC in the south. This region is home to more than 50 million people (17 per cent of the US population) and accounts for 20 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP) of the United States.

Australia Australia, on the other hand, has four conurbations (see FIGURE 6 ). One is in south-east Queensland; a second joins Melbourne and Geelong; and a third is from Perth to Mandurah. The fourth, the Newcastle– Wollongong conurbation in NSW, stretches for over 250 kilometres and is home to almost 6 million people.
