FIGURE5 shows the rights and responsibilities we have as Australian citizens. However, as our country is part of the global community, we also need to consider our role as global citizens. According to the Oxfam International definition of global citizenship , these responsibilities include those shown in FIGURE6 .

FIGURE6 The responsibilities of a global citizen

Take responsibility for their actions

Understand how the world works economically, politically, socially, culturally, technologically and environmentally

Are aware of the wider world and have a sense of their

own role as a world citizen

Responsibilities of global citizens

Participate in and contribute to the community at a range of levels, from local to global

Are willing to act to make the world a more sustainable place

Respect and value diversity

Are outraged by social injustice

As you can see, being an active global citizen is no easy task, especially when you consider that active global citizens also need to be active citizens of their own countries. However, to maintain the strength and cohesion of our communities, it is important that we have an understanding of our roles and a willingness to participate.
