LESSON 21.1 Overview

INQUIRY QUESTION What is your role within the economy, what do you need to know and who canhelp? The Australian economy is the total of all activities undertaken for the purpose of producing, distributing and consuming the goods and services we require to satisfy our needs and wants. As young consumers, our interactions with the economy become more frequent and more serious as we age. In the near future, conversations will turn to work, our future and therefore our rights and responsibilities. Our first step is likely to be work experience through school or a part-time job. In all our dealings with the Australian economy, we want to be treated fairly when dealing with businesses and we want to know our rights. It is important to understand the role of the government in our working lives, including the role of the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), MyGov, Medicare, Consumer Affairs Victoria and other organisations that protect consumers and impose obligations upon us.
