The TOEFL iBT Official Prep Book (Volume I)

Excerpt A Manager: Let me see… I’m offering you something that has the hours you want—it’s right here on campus—and you make as much money as you did being a waiter. Quite a sacrifice. The student must decide whether to accept the job the manager offered or keep his job as a waiter. Does the manager think this decision would be easy or difficult to make? How do you know? Excerpt B Student: What’s, uh, prep work? Manager: You prepare food for the cooks—you know, like cutting up vegetables for soup or cleaning greens for salads . Student: Oh…That doesn’t sound… I mean, being a waiter, I get to see a lot of the professors, like, in a different light. We joke around a little, you know… In the classroom they always have to be pretty formal, but… Is the student interested in doing prep work? Why or why not? Excerpt C Student: I’m sorry. I know you’re just trying to help. I guess, uh, I guess I should look into the food prep job. Manager: OK then. I’ll tell the kitchen manager that you’ll stop by tomorrow to talk about the job and schedule your hours. And, I’ll let the dining hall manager know that he needs to find a new waiter for the evening. Does the manager think the student will accept or reject the job offer? How do you know? Excerpt D Professor: There’s a third movement the hypothesis covers called precession. Precession, basically, is the change in the direction of the Earth’s axis of rotation. It would take me a million years to explain even just the basics of this movement, as precession is quite complex . Is the professor going to explain how “precession” works? Why or why not? Activity 8.2: Biology Lecture • This biology lecture is about a snowshoe hare, which is a type of animal, similar to a large rabbit, that lives in cold climates in North America. • In the TOEFL iBT Listening section, some questions are answered directly in the conversations and lectures . Professor: Now James, you said you’ve been to the state of Maine, right? Student: Yeah, actually, I lived in western Maine till I was about 16. Professor: Great. So why don’t you tell everybody what it’s like there in the winter.
