Getting used to timings in the Speaking section One of the challenges in the TOEFL iBT Speaking section is managing time effectively. Preparation time (15, 20, or 30 seconds) can feel short, while speaking time (45 or 60 seconds) can feel very long to some but very short to others . Use this activity to improve your sense of timing . Activity 1.3 • Use a timer or stopwatch that shows seconds . Start the timer, but don’t look at it! • Speak (in English or your own language) about everything you did yesterday. • When you think 45 seconds has passed, stop speaking and look at the timer. Were you close to correct? Practice it several times with both 45 and 60 seconds until you feel confident in your sense of speaking time limits .
